The easiest and best way to see the islands near Nha Trang is to do a snorkel tour. After the snorkel tour in Cambodia we were apprehensive but looking forward to spending a day cruising a round and meeting new people.
The "Four Island" tour took us on a boat to the middle of the four islands, the main two being Mun and Mot island. Here we had three stops for snorkeling on the modest reef that is here. On entry to the clear water all was good. We snorkelled for 20 minutes until it became clear that we were surrounded by jelly fish. From past experience we both know that in this situation we don't react well and it is best to get out. Hats off to the americans who were taking stings for fun but that isn't us. The next two stops were tainted by the same and other problems.
Stop 2 - A hundred meter swim to the reef in deep water (you couldn't even see the bottom deep) where the currents were dragging snorkelers into rocks and open water. We opted for sunbathing on the top deck.
Stop 3 - Full a jelly fish once again and even the Americans got out. Also just after a massive lunch didn't seem appealing.
We were more than happy not to snorkel and just enjoy the trip which gave us a chance to meet new people and find out about where we are going and the best places to stay, eat and things to do. This was the best part of a tour and we also got to share our do's and don'ts which actually becomes a really valuable part of traveling.
The return journey called for a beer in the sun and a 'how the hell did we get here?!?'. They happen every now and again.
On the snorkeling front it is clear that for us wetsuits are a must when jellyfish are present and if possible a taxi boat that drops you off and picks you up at the correct locations, ala whitsundays australia.
Nha Trang is owned by a huge Russian population and in some respects is their version of Benidorm. This is clear to see everywhere we walk and gives an underground crime feel to the whole place. Also the warnings of muggings and bag snatching are everywhere. Nha Trang doesn't seem very Vietnamese.
Two things went wrong tonight in our attempt to see the city.
1. Matt got severely pissed off when the waiter didn't bring him extra chili with his meal. A clear sign that our spice tolerance is in good form.
2. A band named 'Nevermind' were playing at a bar near to the hostel so got a drink and waited for them to start. Any person who has a gram of musical knowledge would expect a band of this name to be at best a Nirvana cover band and at worst a rubbish punk rock covers band. Oh how wrong we were..... 6 teenage locals playing Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Enrique Iglesias covers. But who are we to judge, they nailed it.
