Nervous Turkey!
Early bird catches ......the 5.20am pickup in a full minivan for an hour and a half down the bumpiest road on earth, to catch the oldest (again packed) rickety train for 2 hours along wonky tracks to go white water rafting on the biggest grade 5 rapids in Borneo.
The guide Keigo = hardest man in the world to read.
The reason for this was he kept throwing horrifying details into the trip but not clarifying if it was in humour or not.
- When rafting don't worry about the crocodiles they have safety men to stop them.
- When the boat capsizes don't worry if you are under water in the 'washing machine' 15 seconds. Just hold your breath and relax.
- We stopped the boat under a tree in the shade, under a bees nest. He then said "Whatever you do, do not touch anything!" as the boat moved under the tree. With all the group bending down low the bees started to sting him. He then follows up with the line, "Malaysian bees are very poisonous, three to four stings can cause loss of consciousness".
- You can jump into the river to body raft but "don't let the strong current carry you off, we won't be able to stop you."
The day was filled we with us laughing of these unsettling gems of wisdom as the activity was a complete andrenaline rush at which point none of the danger even mattered.
The rafting was crazy and our group pulled together and made it down the 10km stretch of rapids with no capsizing and only once did we get thrown out. At one point we acted as the safety boat collecting bodies from a capsized boat further up river that were flowing away in the strong currents.
The journey home was the reverse of the morning but in the heaviest monsoon yet. The Rapids would have been mental if it had rained like this last night.
