Nervous Turkey!
With an anxious wait to be picked up to go on a tour to the Mari Mari Cultural Village at 9.20am that we booked online late last night, we got a whatsapp off the driver. How very 2015 of them. We packed into the multi cultural minivan and set off.
The Mari Mari Cultural village was very informative about the tribal ways of life that were present in Borneo over the last few hundred years. The trip was made pretty hilarious by the guide AK or 'AK47' as he kept referring to himself. The tour was a walk through a village of huts which were typical of the five main tribes (Dunsun, Rungus, Lundayeh, Bajua and Murut - the headhunting tribe) that settled in Sabah and the guides cooked you traditional food and drinks and lifestyle. We ate out of bamboo cooking pots, drunk rice wine (montoku), whiskey, honey, ate Jala (a local cake), drunk pandan juice and had a go at making a fire.
After this we met the chief of the Murut tribe for an intimidating welcoming ceremony were he had to figure out if we were a threat. Once we were friends he let us have a shot with his blow pipe to aim for the head (coconut) in the distance (8m away). Each person of the group then tried the Lansaran, a traditional trampoline, to try and grab a prize that was high up in the roof. Headhunters Tattoos were then given to us before the pre - lunch performance given by the staff. Some very intricate footwork we must say but we were able to match it when we were asked to get up on stage. Mari Mari means 'come come' in Malay but we would not have if we knew the truth about Borneo. The guide unofficially told us that there are still cases of headhunting every year but the government keep it under wraps so not to put off travelers. A great day and luckily kept our heads.
