The day Kate & Wills went for a day out at Cambodia's version of the Butlins Redcoats performing on Blackpool Pier, looking over Roundhay Lake, next to Crossgreen Carboot Sale with a bit of a Chinese influence.... thats how strange today was!!
The day was chilled out but we were anticipating our trip out this evening with Rattana. He had asked us yesterday if we wanted to go out but we did not understand where he wanted to take us (a bit of a language barrier) so being polite we just said yes. At 5pm all 3 of us mounted his motorbike (this is normal over here!) and set off into the dusk on the road of unknown. We pulled up at a carpark full of motorbikes, where we jumped off, still not really knowning what we had pulled up at. We just followed him!!
Part 1 - A walk around a lake with a huge temple in the middle, surrounded by art telling the story of Buddha.
Part 2 - Purchase a ticket and enter a strange fairground type place. There were rides of kids, a market, rickerty bridges to cross the lake, karaoke, people wanting to take your picture posed with flowers, food, caves with strange statues on top and lots of water features. Very strange!!
We began walking around the outer walls which explained the order of the Chinese years and the story of Buddha's celebration.
Char - YEAR OF THE DRAGON
Matt - YEAR OF THE GOAT
Rattana - YEAR OF THE PIG
As we walked around a group of girls followed like paparazzi, eventually stopping to take a picture of Matt. We continued our walk and then posed for a photo, where some girls took our photo as well, then again as we posed for a 'selfie' in a cave. We think they thought we were royalty being the only non-Cambodian's there.
We stood and watched an ínteresting show' which started as a cabaret show of random people singing and then ended with strange danicng, whilst lip-sycning Beyonce tracks and a comedy act by some ladyboys. We didn't quite get it but then again it was in Cambodian! We laughed when the crowd laughed and clapped when we thought was right (but nobody else seemed to do this!) Again we were looked at by many and after the last act we headed to find the motorbike. What an awesome, random trip out - strange but very enjoyable.
The return trip was in the pitch black. We held on tight as we bumped up and down the Cambodian countryside.... pleased to say we made it!!
