We were up early to be disappointed that the whale watching trip had been cancelled. Apparently it was too windy and rough, and as there are few whales left in the area the chances of seeing them was very low.
We headed off up north driving through some agricultural land but mainly miles of forests. We stopped briefly in Bundaberg which Graham thought was famous for its cake but is in fact famous for rum and ginger beer. We sampled the ginger beer but not the rum.
We reached the resort of Agnes Water by lunchtime, this is the most northerly Australian surf beach. The place was quite small and we even had trouble finding the surf shop where we hired a couple of body boards. I know we should have hired surf boards but we are not as cool as all the young backpackers that seemed to fill the resort.
We stayed the night at the town of 1770 (yes that is what it is called ) sometimes written as Seventeen Seventy. We had a cabin on the Captain Cook Campsite. Apparently the famous man first landed in Australia here in May 1770 , he must of thought it quite a nice beach to land on. The campsite is in the middle of the forest and there are lots of strange noises in the dark outside, although we haven't seen much wildlife apart from wild turkeys .The only kangaroo we have seen was an accident victim on the side of the road.
