It's nearly a week since we arrived in Australia, the time is going so quickly and the weather has been perfect but we won 't mention weather as we have heard that the UK is being battered.
We left lovely Noosa getting lost again, but eventually reached the highway.
We headed north to Hervey Bay a coastal town only famous for its whale watching. The humpback whales come to Hervey Bay with their young between July and November, as it is a large sheltered bay on their way to Antartica for cooler waters. We had been to tourist information offices on the way and there seemed to be loads of boats going on these trips. We arrived in Hervey Bay to find it was a huge city that sprawled along ten miles of coastline.
We went along to the harbour expecting to find loads of companies touting for whale watching trips but it was a bit dead, it appears that many of the companies had finished for season, only two companies were going out and neither were doing afternoon trips, apparently there are few whales left as they have gone south early as it has been unseasonably warm. As we had come here for the whales we booked a trip for tomorrow, hopefully we shall see some.
We drove along the long esplanade. The beach is sheltered by Fraser Island so there is no surf. This sprawling city seemed to have an abundance of retirement villages. As we were being nosey in an estate agents window, a lady came out to try and sell us a property, she explained that as there was no surf there was lack of youth and backpackers, which made it more attractive for the oldies, of course Graham didn't agree.
We stayed in a cabin on a camp site which was quite cosy and basic but fine, and had a swimming pool right outside our door -perfect. We also had swim in the sea which was very warm. Apart from warm sea and sunshine there wasn't much else to say about Hervey Bay Hopefully tomorrow we can say there are whales here.
