We both managed to get some sleep on the coach. Not easy sleeping on a coach though is it? You try to hold your head up, then start getting to sleep and your head just falls. I've seen Therese sleep a few times now with her head just hanging down.
Three and half hours later we got to Byron Bay. A small chilled-out town with lots of little trinket shops, nice restaurants and some pubs/bars. The town tries to keep it's charm and they won't even allow a McDonalds in. They've got Subway though. And there's a 24 hour pie shop...? We've got 3 nights here and lots of people we've been speaking to have really enjoyed it here so looking forward to it.
The Oz Experience bus dropped us off at the transit centre and there was a mini-bus waiting to take us to our hostel. It was nice and humid when we arrived and the sun was breaking through. We're staying at Aquarius which was recommended by a few people. It's close to the beach too. $35 (£24) each a night it's costing! For a flipping 8 bed dorm! So pretty much £50 per room per night!! But that's the going rate around here. We walked into our dorm and there were just 2 beds left - top bunk on 2 bunk beds. Lovely. And then we realised there was an "en-suite" - one toilet and shower for 8 people. Oh, hang on. Then there's a "private" room that also uses the en-suite. 10 people to one toilet and shower. And there's quite a few girls so it's going to be ridiculous trying to get a shower.
The joys of dorm rooms. Glad we didn't go for a private room here. Not so private when it's just a room that you have to get to through the dorm! And it costs $100 (£66) for that!! Dorms are all we can afford anyway. There's a decent communal kitchen though and communal areas, plus there's a bar. Actually, one good thing is we got vouchers to have a free meal if we buy a drink in the bar. We'll see how that is tomorrow night I think. Tonight we're eating our wraps we made at surf camp.
Our bus driver arranged free entry into a bar called Cheeky Monkeys, so we all met in there at around 7pm. It's a really popular place and people were actually queuing outside for it to open at 7pm. We walked straight in like VIPs - check that out. There was a discount for us on meals but obviously we didn't need to eat. It was still about $12 (£8) for a chicken burger anyway! It was also happy hour - beer still cost $4.70 (£3.20) a pint!
Before long the bar started doing games for prizes. And I was picked for the first game along with another lad! We had to put a bandana on and then attach a pedometer to it....then for the next three minutes shake our heads up and down!! It was ridiculous, we looked like idiots. Within 10 seconds mine flipping fell off. So I had to reattach it and keep going. My neck was killing me - I was like one of those car nodding dogs. It was a long three minutes. The results: me, 146; other guy, 400+! I don't know what happened there at all, but I missed out on winning a surfing lesson. Oh well.
There were some really good prizes throughout the night actually - free sky dive, sailing trip and some others. Some crazy games to get those prizes though.
Then the place suddenly changed into a night club. Where we'd been sat eating had turned into the dance-floor. Actually, dance-tables! There was some good music on and it was absolutely packed out. It was a really good night and we stuck with a few couples from the OzEx bus and had a good laugh together. Only thing was, after 10pm, beer went up to $5.70 (£3.95) a pint, and after 12am it was $6.70 (£4.60). The place closed at 3am, but we left at 2am. It had been throwing it down all night while we were in the club, and there were little streams flowing on the roads! The rain wasn't too bad when we left.
Straight back to our hostel and tip toeing around to get to bed.
