We were woken up at "Surf O'clock" this morning - 7am. Could have some with another 5 hours sleep considering we've hardly had any due to one guy snoring all night and another coughing his lungs up. Quick change into our swim gear, brush teeth, checkout and down for breakfast. Pretty good breakfast actually with a mini fry-up, cereals, fruit and toast.
At 8am we started our surf briefing. The instructors were just like stereotypical "surf dudes". Lounging about in hammocks looking like they haven't had a shower for a while, scraggly bleached hair and looking hungover.
We went through all the boring stuff first and then we headed down to the beach with our surf boards. There's a bridge to cross over the water to get to the beach, but it only goes about half way...Therese was nearly swept away right there at the start!! We got onto the beach and was shown how to jump up onto the board etc. By this time I just wanted to get in the water and have a go! Although Therese wasn't really looking forward to it.
Finally, time to surf!! And it's pretty difficult! I managed to stand up a few times and ride a small wave in but not very far. Don't think I was getting up quick enough. My board nose dived into the water a couple of times too which sent me tumbling and I the board cracked my around the head. It's a good thing they're beginners boards so they're softer and safer.
I really enjoyed it, but it's frustrating too, especially when you miss a big wave.
I ended up a bit too far out towards the end - near all the proper Surfers! But then I saw se dolphins! They were just swimming around a bit further behind us. Pretty good to see though. I was relieved when somebody shouted dolphins because if I'd have seen them first, I'd probably have thought shark!!
I think we were out there about 2 hours, which is enough as it's really tiring. Really enjoyed it though and definitely want to give it a go a few more times as we travel up the coast. Therese isn't so keen mind, but she gave it a go anyway.
After getting showered etc, we went for our lunch. There was loads and loads of salad stuff - it was like being let loose in Subway. Stuffed our faces and then sneakily made another one to take away. That was Sconesey's recommendation! Nearly got caught doing it.
And at 1pm we set off for our next port of call...
