Today was our first full day in Shanghai. We met at 9.30am and had a nice walk through People's Square to the Shanghai Museum - ate our cereal bar along the way. The museum shows the clothing, paintings, pottery, coins etc throughout Chinese history. We had a wander around for a couple of hours and sneaked in a quick coffee.
After that we all went to the Silk Market in the Bazaar around Yuyuan Gardens and Shanghai Old Street. I love how one minute you are walking and seeing skyscrapers and the next corner it's all very traditional looking Chinese buildings. They're new buildings, but they have a very traditional look. Therese bought a little silk purse and then we went to loom around the stalls in the bazaar. Me, Therese, Johanna and Therese went off on our own to find some lunch and ended up getting some really nice spring rolls from some little stall - 3 for 6 Yuan (60p).
The rest of the afternoon we spent just having a walk around the city whilst looking for Internet/WiFi - cannot believe how difficult it's been to find! Took us about 2 hours of searching and Swedish Therese managed to sweet talk somebody in this Community Centre type place (think it was like a community learning place) into letting us use there computers. Well, it wasn't as simple as that. First the language barrier, then We had to fill forms in, provide passports, they took our picture...then they gave us a card and kept telling us it lasts for a year...couldn't be arsed telling them We only needed it for a day. Got this official card now anyway...
At 7pm the group met again for our last supper together. We went to a nice restaurant close by and had, errm, Chinese food. After that, one of the girls in our group, Sarah, knew of a Youth Hostel bar close to the Bund. It didn't look like we were anywhere special, then when we got to the bar on the 6th floor, it had a really amazing view over the river at the Financial District - Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai World Financial Centre, Jin Mao Tower etc. It was really cool to sit there having a drink and looking out at the skyline with all the lights changing on the buildings - exactly what we wanted to experience is Shanghai, so we're very happy! And the bar also had FREE WiFi !!!!! After our group left we finally posted to our blog and made some long overdue phone calls home! Almost the best bar in Shanghai maybe? It's the Captain Bar on the 6th floor of the Captain YHA Hotel.
