Tried to get an early start today, but it was difficult dragging Therese out of bed! We were still up at 7.45am though. Wanted to get an early Speed Ferry to Macau (former Portuguese colony on mainland china). On the way out of our guest house, a new sign had been put up to say that the level 3 flag had been raised for the typhoon. Therese tried to ask the security guy what the level 3 flag near the elevators means but he just kept telling her where the elevators are located...
We managed to catch the 9.30am ferry which cost 546HKD (about £45). Not too bad and it gets us there in 1 hour. We got on the ferry and were surprised to see rows and rows of big comfortable leather seats. Was a bit like being on an aeroplane but loads more space and seats. Some instructions come of the PA system "the catamaran may be unstable due to sea conditions, please remain seated throughout the journey to avoid injury. Life jackets are located at the back of the seats..." well Therese's face was a picture! I had to laugh, but she didn't look impressed in the slightest.
It was pretty rough out at sea, but the ferry flies through the sea, can't believe how fast it goes.
When we were about half way there, the sea was very very rough and the ferry was really rocking side to side and crashing down. Therese didn't like it at all, and I'd even stopped laughing about it. It went on like that for about 30 minutes, then it calmed down but was still rough. One kid was sick too. I was going to ask Therese if she thought the sea was warm but thought it was inappropriate.
I have a daypack with me that is waterproof and can float in water. It has a special top that if you fasten it tight enough, it keeps lots of air in. If it capsized, we could hold on to this for a while.
Macau looked nice as we arrived at about 10.35am and we were glad to hit land. Could see the big casinos and Portuguese style buildings etc. We had a nice time and caught the ferry back at 11am...well we didn't fancy getting stuck in Macau seeing as though our flight out of Hong Kong to Bangkok is tomorrow. Everyone was given a seat at the back of the ferry. Again, the woman on the PA warned us about the rough seas and also that the Typhoon Level 3 flag has been raised.
Really, we shouldn't have gone to Macau considering the Typhoon is around. But on the news this morning it said that the typhoon is heading past the east of Hong Kong to mainland China. Macau is to the west of Hong Kong but obviously the typhoon is affecting all sea that is local to it.
It was like an expensive roller coaster ride - kind of worth it for the thrill, but didn't fancy capsizing out in the china sea.
I told Therese to put her iPod on and listen to some music to take her mind off it. I put mine on too - was going to hit Shuffle Songs, but was a bit worried about the random song being that Titanic one by Celine Dion.
Needed music on to drown out the screaming from the kid behind us.
I double checked my daypack to make sure it still had plenty of air in too...
The journey back was worse. Think I was nearly sick - my mouth was watering anyway.
Therese held her St Christopher necklace pendant for the whole journey - patron saint of travellers.
We got back to Hong Kong safe and sound! Although at customs, the officer who reviewed my passport took a double take at me - it's because my hair is longer and the photo was taken in early 2004. Its actually happened a couple if times now this. I'm probably going to get taken into security in one of these countries for extra checks!
After that we had a walk around Kowloon and grabbed some lunch. We decided we'd go to Disneyland, but went back to our room first to get some blister patches - all the bloody walking we've done! Therese checked on the Disneyland website and it said that a lot of the outdoor rides were closed due to high winds, so that was that. We're cursed by bad weather! It's on the news about flooding in Bangkok and Vietnam too!!
We felt a bit tired so decided to take advantage of the free time and took a quick nap....we woke up 2 hours later! Felt like a waste, but definitely needed it.
For our last night in Hong Kong, we decided to eat at Temple Spicy Crab again, up in the Temple Street Market. I really just wanted the same as last time, sweet & sour chicken and curry fries rice, but thought we should try something else. We had some noodles in soy sauce and chicken curry with boiled rice. It was very good. Noodles weren't nice, and the chicken in the curry was fatty and had skin on. The curry sauce was nice though...was just missing some chips!
Time to get packed up ready for an early start for our flight tomorrow to Bangkok...
