We were up at 5. We had breakfast, stripped the beds, got a wash and was on the tour bus by 6. We headed out of Alice Springs to a camel farm. Lee said he didn't wanna be the one to break the camels back.... (Ba bum tsh) so I rode my 1st camel! It hurts! They bob u up and down. I don't know how people ride miles on them?! After a ride (and a chat to the camel asking him not to spit at me, he agreed) we saw some kangaroos and Emus then headed towards Kings Canyon.
On the bus the driver gave everyone a pen and asked us to write our names and where we're from on the window.... I know it wasn't a competition but ours was the best and I made sure I put WIDNES on the map with a mini diagram :)
Because it was 43' today the canyon walk, across the top had been closed 'for our safety' so we did the creek walk. The canyon is huge. We were told geographically how it was formed and told about the plants and wildlife. After pics at the view point we headed back to the bus for a ham salad sandwich.
The clouds on the way were magical. Me and lee found loads of shapes but eye spy doesn't really work... After S sand, sun, sky; T trees; B bush, bus; C Campervan, car.... We'd covered everything in sight. I tried eye spy colours but Lee's rubbish when guessing made up colours so we had a power nap instead.
We stopped at the side of the road and found some lizard tracks and a huge evaporated salt lake so we climbed down and had a lick. The salt had solidified on the sand when all the water had evaporated! Me and Dylan, the tour guide, found the easiest way to try the salt without getting the sand underneath was just to do a press up on the lake with your tongue out. Lee had had enough of salt and sand so didn't bother with the press up/ lick action. I can confirm it was definitely salt!
We drove on to Curtin Springs for some beers and ciders for camp. As we were driving to get the beers Dylan pulled over at the side of the road and sent us all into the bush to collect fire wood. (Fyi don't try hopping like a kangaroo through the bush... It makes u quicker but you look like a plonker and it's way more tiring than walking) I picked up a branch and walked back. Lee came back with a tree under each arm... He's the incredible hunk (Martha's words, not mine ha)
When we got to camp it was literally a sand area in the middle of bush land. No facilities, except a hole in the ground with a toilet placed on top! We built the fire as others set up camp and prepared food. We had chilli con carne and rice. To light the fire Dylan just moved the Ash around with a stick and the dry grass went to flames. The campsite had been used the night before so it was still hot!
When we'd finished we sat down and Dylan ran off to catch a kangaroo with a shovel, torch and knife.... He came back with a kangaroo tail (from the trailer) and popped it on the barbee.
Lee took a huge bite when Dylan passed it round :/ It look so wrong yet tasted like salty pork.
After we'd eat and chilled out with our beer and cider we eat marshmallows over the camp fire then set our swags up. It's basically a body bag with a mattress in. You pop your sleeping bag inside, zip up and sleep. No tent.
