PHOTOS WILL GO UP LATER I PROMISE!
Been quite an eventful few days. Don't know whether its the jet leg, time difference or something else but I'm falling asleep early and waking up really early atm, like 6:30, which is both good and bad.
We were out for 9 yesterday morning, had a wander round, came across Sydney Grammar School and their ridiculous uniforms. We decided to go take a look in the Australian Museum which was quite good fun, took us about 2 hours to go round it all. Victoria was very excited because there was a dinosaur exhibition.
Left here with the intention of heading to The Rocks, which is basically an area of shops, restaurants and cafes at the base of Sydney Opera House. We've come to learn that I am absolutely shocking with maps, so much so that we do the opposite of what I think is right.
Anyway we ended up at the complete opposite end of the city, though luckily Darling Harbour is at that end so we had some lunch there and a wander, and the sun came out so all was good. Place was crawling with school kids, must have been a field trip or something, lucky us.
It was about 1:30 by this time so decided to start walking back to the hostel. After numerous wrong turns and walking round the same block twice we eventually got back to the hostel.
Now the big event of the day, for me at least, happened around 11 in the morning, on our walk down to supposedly The Rocks but actually Darling Harbour. When I'd put my contact lenses in that morning, 1 of them must have torn in my eye, it was agony, so I put fresh ones in. At the time it was fine, didnt think anything of it, but the later the day went on the worse it felt, by lunchtime I could tell there was quite a deep scratch in it. By 5 it looked like I had a black eye, was watering like crazy and could hardly open it, so it kind of ruined the entire day. Went to bed and had to keep my eyes closed, resulting in an extremely early night.
Victoria went out with some people from the hostel and got in at around 1. I woke up, had a chat to her and 1 of our roomies (we're sharing with 2 guys, a Manc and a French guy) and went back to sleep. Eyes are still pretty sore today and extremely bloodshot, so not the greatest start but should clear up in a few days.
Our hostel booking runs out this weekend, meaning we don't have anywhere to stay Sunday night. With this in mind we went looking at a hostel I remembered from my last trip to Sydney called Wake Up! This place is amazing, its literally a hotel where you have to share rooms (which is great fun atm, though I'm wondering when the novelty will wear off). The scary thing is it only costs $3 (around 2 quid) a night more than where we're staying now. Don't get me wrong where we're staying is fine, rooms are fine, beds are really comfy, its easy to live here, but it's very basic. Just little things like a bedside lamp, more than 1 plug socket in a room, enough showers so you don't have to wait 30 minutes to get 1. You seem to get a lot more for your money than you do where we are atm. It's also in a brilliant area (its 100m away from where we're staying at xmas, yay!)
Anyway after all that, we're seriously considering hiring a campervan for 3 weeks, driving across to Adelaide, down the Great Ocean Road, and finishing of at Melbourne. I think we've both realised we aren't massive City people and it would be quite a fun thing to do, before we get a job either in Sydney or Melbourne.
Jobs are really easy to get, its weird after the stress people go through in England. There people we chat to in the hostel who have jobs have all managed to get 1 in like 3 days so I don't think we'll struggle. I'm gonna try and get an Office job, you get between $800 - $1200 per week, thats like 600 - 900 quid, its mad. Though that is in Sydney, not sure about Melbourne, but if we do end up there I'm fairly sure our cost of living will drop, as well as potentially earnings. For example, 600ml of Coke/Sprite/etc will cost you 2 quid. A sandwich is 4, bar of chocolate is 1, McDonalds is 7, and parking jebus lord parking is around 20 quid for 3 hours.
Anyway, feels like I've done nothing but moan in this update but we're having a great time (apart from the eyes). Must admit I'm quite looking forward to getting a job, really missing a form of routine.
Got 10 mins left of breakfast, woo. Will update again over the weekend, pictures will go up tonight I promise :D
