G'Day Backpackers
This is a hostel you grow to love I think.
We've been so unlucky with roommates, it's been a bit rubbish really. Our 1st room we had to ourselves for 2 nights, we then got 2 guys who were staying for 1 night, and then we got moved into another room. Was awesome for the 1st night because our friend Emma from Sweden was in that room, but she moved out the following day. We were left sharing with 3 Swedish people who were so antisocial. They'd be up at 7am talking really loud, and be at bed by 9. It got to the point 1 morning that I was woke up and basically said "Stop talking so loud", thankfully they were quiet for the rest of the mornings. They moved out today, and so far no one else has moved in so we might have the room to ourselves tonight which would be awesome.
As for the room itself, pretty standard, beds (actually really comfy) a fridge, a TV and a sink. We literally only slept in them so more than adequate for us.
The bathrooms, hmmm a bit dodge to be honest. The pictures I've put up are actually of the nicest of the 5, it was only refurbished like 10 days ago. It's ok, though the shower is awful, half the time either the hot or cold won't turn on at all and when it does it goes from being the temperature you set it at to being completely freezing, and then boiling hot.
The living room is quite cool, if a bit of a dive. Massive TV and DVD player, 3 comfy sofas and 3 computers. Australian TV is so bad, its either GMTV crossed with QVC, or a crap American chat show like Oprah.
The kitchen is pretty good really. It's big, and has enough work surfaces/hobs for about 10 people to be cooking at the same time. Tones of pans/plates/cutlery etc.
Finally my favourite part of the place, the outside. There's 2 sections, there's the covered section and the uncovered. People tend to start the night undercover and move outside a bit later, you literally get half the hostel down here most nights which is good fun. Only problem is they shut it at 10:30, so you then have to go out, go to bed and try and cram onto a sofa in the TV room.
It's quite a weird hostel really because it's so unorganised and the facilities aren't great but it seems to attract such a brilliant crowd. One of my favourite people is a girl called Jess, she's 20 and has worked everywhere from being in an Office to being a Prison Warden. I've subscribed to her "Early morning Jess txts" which she writes on her way to work and are the most stupid random crap you'll ever read.
I think what sums up this hostel is the Living Room quote: "quite cool, if a bit of a dive". It's in a bit of a dodgy area, but like no one will let anyone walk home alone. What it lacks in "home luxuries" it more than makes up for in the atmosphere and crowd it attracts.
We've got 1 more night here and I think we'll be sad to leave, but I don't think we'll come back, just due to all our friends also moving on and it won't be the same place this time next month.
All in all a pretty damn good place to spend a few weeks in Sydney.
