Today was our kayaking trip so we were up early for our breakfast which was included. This was in a restaurant on the river so it was quite nice to sit here and look at the view whilst waiting for everyone to turn up.
Once everyone had eaten we got given all our equipment and got in the kayaks ready to set off! We paddled along the edge of Don Det which was really peaceful until we were told to be a bit more careful as there were some Rapids. These weren't as scary as they sounded and were actually quite fun! Our first stop was another waterfall on Don Khon. We left our kayaks and walked to where the waterfall was, which was nice but not as impressive as the ones over the other side of the island. Another group out on the same trip arrived and once everyone had finished swimming we merged the two groups and headed off. We walked a bit to where the kayaks had been moved to and stopped here for a really nice BBQ lunch.
Once everyone was ready we got back in our kayaks and headed off again onto some more Rapids. Me and Shane were doing okay until a group in front crashed into one of the bushes that are in the water, which caused another kayak to hit them and both of them to capsize! As we were behind them some of them tried to grab on to our kayak and we nearly went as well but managed not to!
Everyone managed to get back on their kayaks and we carried on until the river opened up and we stopped here a while to see the river dolphins. They weren't very close but it was still amazing to see them popping up out of the water, especially as they are so rare now. After a whole we kayaked a bit more to where a stone jutted out of the water and all of our guides got out to climb it and jump off into the water. Some others got out to swim and jump as well but we decided it wasn't worth trying to get back into our kayaks in the middle of a river. By this point we had been paddling for a while and it was quite a distance until our next point but we pushed through and were the first ones without a guide to reach the land!
The kayaks were put into a truck and we were put into a bus which we quickly realised was the same one we had from the border with the same driver! It wasn't too far to our next stop is which was the widest waterfall in South East Asia. This was amazing and looked incredible! After wondering around looking at it from every angle we headed back to the bus and to our last stop. This was down a very bumpy road near where we had got the ferry back to our kayaks. We were knackered at this point but we finally made it back to Don Det beach!
We headed straight back to have a shower and finish our packing before booking our bus for tomorrow morning.
We have really loved Don Det and would like to stay longer but both of us are ready to start moving after staying in the same place for so long! Next stop Thakhek!
