After a decent flight from Rome, I touched down in Athens and was instantly feeling like a fish out of water! I realised that I had no idea how I was getting from the airport to my hostel! After giving up on buses and going by train instead, I only just made it onto the train as the doors closed. Luckily I remembered that I had printed out booking details and was able to then find the hostel with ease! Not the greatest way to start my time travelling solo but I ended up surviving it intact!
I then spent my first night in Athens with Jenny and Nat from Naples and their friends for dinner which was really good fun!
In the morning I went wandering around the city and the outskirts of the Acropolis, partly to find my bearings and also just to explore and see it all in the sunshine. Athens is a beautiful city! As you wander through the city, ruins pop up around every corner!
Afterwards I headed to a sports bar to watch some of the EPL soccer and ended up making some good mates there who I spent the rest of the night with.
The next morning it was off on the walking tour with some German guys and Aussie girls I'd met the night before. We walked around and saw and were told about the Temple of Zeus, and then it was a quick dash to see the changing of the guards at the Parliament House. In the sweltering heat all the guards had to wear the traditional Greek military uniform which takes two people to get on! There were a lot of funny movements where it looked a bit like a Monty Python skit as they did all kinds of silly walks in their clogs! We then saw Syntagma Square which is the main square in Athens outside the Parliament and the Ministry if Economics, where all the riots take place. You can still see the damage on the surrounding walls from all the latest riots! We then went through seeing the Cathedral of Athens, the Roman and Greek Agoras (Markets for those playing at home) and we sat on the rock where Saint Paul came to preach Christianity for the first time in Greece! We finished with a quick walk up a hill to a viewpoint with a fantastic outlook on the Parthenon on the Acropolis. The walking tour was fantastic and it taught me loads about Ancient Greece, the Byzantine empire and the most recent time of monarchy in Greece.
Afterwards I went with the Germans and Aussies up to the Parthenon and then down to the Temple of Epheustus. The views from atop the Acropolis were absolutely stunning! I then went down tithe sports bar again but this time to see Arsenal against Tottenham in the EPL, which was the game I had really wanted to see!
Today I sadly had to leave Athens to go to Delphi. I wish I had of had a few more days here but I will definitely be coming back!
Anyways now it's off to Delphi with a guy called Ed who I met on the first night, he's going to both Delphi and Meteora at the same time as me and I'm sure he will be really good fun to travel with!
