After a much better night's sleep, we packed up again and left our little bungalow/shack behind. We took a taxi from the hotel to the port at Thong Sala where we thought we could catch a boat to Samui at 10am based on what our guidebook said - wrong! No boat until 11am so we waited around and arranged a transfer to our hotel on the other side. Our SeaTran ferry eventually arrived and we were off for the short hop (about half an hour) to Big Buddha pier, named after a massive statue at the entrance to the port on Koh Samui. We were shown to our minibus transfer after battling our way through the crowds getting off the boats…only to arrive five minutes later at our hotel! Maybe not worth the 100 baht (£2) each for the transfer then! You live and learn…
We checked into Tuk Tuk Hotel and were very pleasantly surprised by what we found - a modern place that looked brand new, friendly staff and a decent room. The bathroom next door even had a bath, which we all took advantage of after our adventures on Koh Phangan!
Then we headed down to the bar for some food (very good burgers!) and Chang on draught! We stayed there for most of the afternoon using the free wi-fi and marvelling at the iconic music posters that had been perfectly handpainted straight onto the walls - the work of someone very talented! Laura went back to the room after a while for a bath and Chris and I got chatting to one of the staff who had just started his shift - a very cheery, friendly Thai lad called 'Jimmy' (probably not his real name!) He explained how to get to the Fisherman's Village, which is where we planned to have dinner, and arranged a taxi for us with one of his friends.
So that's where we ended up for dinner; it's a small place with very narrow streets and lots of shops and restaurants - very atmospheric! After walking up and down the street, we eventually settled on an Indian place which turned out to be an excellent choice - set menus for us all, plenty of choice, good food and good service!
After dinner, we had another look around the shops and I picked up a pair of replacement flip flops for 200 baht - bargain! On the way out of the village, we walked past a restaurant advertising lots of meals containing 'beep' - fried rice with beep, beep with potatoes, etc. We're presuming no-one's bothered to tell them how to spell 'beef' because it's too good an opportunity for a photo!
Back at Tuk Tuk, Laura went off to bed and I stayed up to watch the football with Chris. By this point the manager, a Scottish guy also called Dave, had arrived and we chatted to him about football for a bit. He's an Airdrie fan so he hasn't really got much to cheer about! We want to watch the Boro vs Leeds game tomorrow night and he said he'd check to see if he could get it on for us. We made it to the end of the game and then headed off to bed ourselves after an enjoyable start to our time on Samui - beach tomorrow!
