Today was our last day in Melaka, after extending another night! Dave decided he wanted to leave the guesthouse and actually see some sights today as he was feeling a bit better. He was feeling up to eating something properly too, so we headed to the little café that I went to yesterday for some fried rice. It seemed to go down well, so fingers crossed he's well on the mend now!
We then headed towards the museums in the town, via the shopping centre for some things we needed. On the way to the museums it started to rain quite heavily so we found some shelter, bought some drinks and sat on a step to wait for the rain to stop. It soon stopped, and we headed to the Maritime museum which was in the form fo a big wooden ship which you went inside to see the exhibitions. It detailed the history of Melaka as a port town, which was successful until the Portuguese and then the British tried to colonise the town. We also visited the Customs museum (because it was free) which wasn't really that interesting! The best bit was the displays of things that have been confiscated by customs, including stuffed animals, animal skins, guns, knives, opium smoking equipment and porn and sex toys (yes, they were really on display!).
We headed back to the hostel as we didn't want to tire Dave out too much! On the way back we stopped at a second hand book shop where I picked up a new book, and a shop for some water and noodles for tea. We spent a few hours relaxing in the dorm, then joined everyone downstairs to watch Gran Torino - a classic!
We went to bed early, as we're up early tomorrow to move onto Penang - via KL to pick up Dave's glasses which he left at the hostel there!
We've loved our stay at Jalan-Jalana and have met some great people here. Perhaps we'll be back one day…
