Day 2 of doing very little in Don Det...the island is tiny, with two paths (not roads) that run down each side of the island, a bridge across to Don Khon island and guesthouses, restaurants and bars scattered along each path...that's about it! It's nice being somewhere so quiet for a few days before we head to Cambodia. The only problem is the usual group of idiot tourists who come and make a mess of the place; the litter problem is quite bad here and will only get worse as the island develops further. It ruins a fantastic spot :-(
Today we went for breakfast at Don Det Bungalows - scrambled egg baguettes...mmm! Then we called in at a few places to try and find some free wifi. The signal here is patchy and we had to try a few before we got online properly.
At about lunchtime, we went back to our hotel to get changed...we were going to hire our second set of tubes in Laos (adter Vang Vieng) for a float down the Mekong (see the picture!) This one was much more relaxed than the last time - no bars to stop at along the way and we had the river to ourselves apart from the odd longboat that passed us...paradise! We managed to scramble out and up the riverbank before we floated too far - there were signs warning us at the place where we picked up our tubes that there are dangerous falls a little further along the river!
Back in town, we headed to the 'beach' (tiny!) for a bit and had a swim in the river. Later, we managed to catch the incredible sunset over the islands from the restaurant at our guesthouse - definitely the bést view on the island and it was the perfect spot to relax with a cold Beerlao.
We ate our tea at the restaurant opposite our hotel and then went for a few drinks around the bars down the path; our drinks included what were possibly the worst cocktails we've ever had...Laura ended up with mouthfuls òf mint leaves! After a few more very cheap Beerlaos, it was off to bed after a lovely lazy day on Don Det!
