We managed to get up a bit earlier today, after our early night, so we decided to hire bikes for the day. The hostel hires them out for $10 a day, whereas it's more like $25 down at the beach. I had my eye on a pink one (of course!) but the French lady whio owned the hostel showed me that the seat was too high and she couldn't lower it. I settled on a nice turquoise coloured one which was also lovely, and had a bigger seat so would be more comfortable. The only thing was it didn't have breaks...hmmm. Neither of us had ridden bikes for at least 10 years so we got off to a bit of a wobbly start but soon got used to it.
We cycled along the smooth boardwalk bike path to nearby Manhatten Beach about 20 minutes away. We had a walk along the pier and then found our spot on the beach for the next few hours. As we were setting up our towels, a lady not far away was packing up to leave. As she walked past us she looked at us, smiling, and said 'We're so lucky to live here!'. We just smiled back and nodded, but we were secretly chuffed that she thought we were locals too!! We must have California tans by now!
The sun was hot and the waves were bigger at this beach so we spent a good few hours there. Back on the cycle path we continued past Hermosa Beach to Redondo Beach, looking at the amazing beachfront houses on the way (mega bucks!!). We headed back to the hostel and posed for a few photos on the bikes outside before handing them back. We visited one of the Irish bars for some happy hour drinks (it would be rude not to!).
In the evening we started in the TV room again and then headed to Waterman's Pub below the hostel for a trivia night that was advertised on the board outside. Liam, another English guy who we'd origionally met in Santa Cruz, joined us there. After a while, we asked the waitress what was happening with the quiz to be told that the quiz guy was on vacation, so no quiz! We went to a few bars instead and I left early as I was tired. Dave stayed out with Liam, Stephen and 3 new English lads (all medics). Dave eventually got to bed at 3am after another good night out!
