In Sydney Nikki told me Canberra can get pretty windy, I made sure I always carry my jumper with me, but now I realise she probably didn't mean weather windy but lots of broken promises windy!
I visited the old and new parliament buildings today, as well as some art galleries.
I was amazed by the old parliament building as they've turned it into a national museum for democracy and they've intricately preserved everything and have given those who visit a real insight into the oddness of parliament.
This includes explanations about the building, what democracy is & countries that operate democratically (ha!), the press gallery (where you can interview a minister - brilliant touch!) and you can see both the senate and house of representatives which surprisingly made me pine for the commons.
When I saw the mace in the house of reps I felt like having a John McDonnell moment and swinging it around but refrained.
Earlier in the day I managed to get into question time in both houses. I was shocked by the low level of debate in the senate as everyone just shouted personal jibes and insults over the speaker/senator so no real answers were heard. I guess I should be used to it but I don't think our peers and MPs are quite that bad...
I felt more at home in the house of reps as generally the barracking was around policies, although the debate on the national broadband network (which is close to my heart as not had much luck connecting out here!) and superannuation didn't seem to excite the other members of the public in the gallery.
The political cartoon gallery is a must for anyone that likes a giggle at the expense of politicians and I found myself chuckling at many of them. Oh and also the rooftop cafe in the new parliament building is a good place to visit too - you can eavesdrop on conversations and also sample some very nice scones with jam and cream (how English am I?)
They defo need to sort out the transport system though as many places are quite a distance from each other and you can't rely on the 3 day old free city loop buses, however Dave the driver was v nice and spookily recognised me from yesterday's journey.
I wasn't a huge fan of Canberra yesterday, but it's grown on me today.

Alan Brown was it not the late Ron Brown that got into trouble with the mace? Glad you're getting around and Enjoying Oz Laura.
Keefy Well honestly... I just rated your blog as five stars, but pressed four by mistake. Bloomin iPads! The thought was there though! Loving the blogs, keep them up! x
