Laura's Travels
greetings from KL!
Arrived in KL on thursday dinner time. My god, stepping off the plane was an experience- the humidity hit us! MC's bag turned up this time- thank god so we went on our way. We picked up a fellow traveller en route as were going in same direction (working out the transport system took a while!) We had booked a hostel called Travellers Palm which we had found on the net on a blog site where travellers recommend places etc. We were given directions so followed it step by step.
On arriving down a sort of back ally near some local indian restaurants we were dubious to say the least- no signs no nothing- just number.10! we decided, since the room cost next to nothing (3 pounds each) we would have a look and move on if it was dodgy. We walked in and a malaysian lady let us in- we took our shoes off before entering and it was basically a big old house. Two other travellers were sat in living room and we had a look in the dorm. Air con- thank god! and clean with sheets etc. The woman was lovely. We all checked in and paid up. We met the other 6 people staying there who were all our age and had a wealth of invaluable info to pass on to us re se asia, so we spent the night chatting away to them all. We all went out for dinner together for an indian- which was amazing. We ate for literally 1 pound! so good too! We then went to find a bar to get a good position for the England game. Eventually we arrived at an irish bar! The drink is so so expensive in comparison to the food prices- its like home and maybe slightly worse. My beer cost the same amount as my bed for the night! mental! It was a late night as the game was on at midnight here. Didnt get to bed til 3! Lots of fun though.
The following day (fri) we went to the famous Petronas Twin Towers to look (went up them the next day) and sorted out our onward transport to thailand. We then went to Chinatown where there's a huge market selling loads of fake goods. I got a LV handbag and matching wallet. Very cheap but had to be a firm haggler! had a lot of fun- we ate lunch in a chinese indoor market and i had noodles- a dish of many meals to come i think! It poored down at 3ish so emailed for a while and headed back to the hostel where we watched some friends episodes on knockoff dvds then went out for a wander to find a cheap kitchen of the same type as last night but perhaps chinese rather than indian. Ended up with thai- lovely. Went to bed at a reasonable hour so as to be up witht he birds in the morning to go up the towers.
Saturday: Up at 7.30 and out at the towers by 9.00 There was a HUGE queue so we got in it! After 40 mins we got to front where they issued a ticket for 2.45! we had to wait til then- so we had a lot of hours to kill! what to do! we decided to go up the other tower (like aukland and sydney towers) It was really good actually- you got an audio tour at the top which told you about all the areas of kl and the buildings. Fun. Had lunch and watched the heavens open again then we went back to the twin towers and went up to the skybridge that connects the towers. Glad i did it- had to be done really but the view was rubbish since the weather was so rotten etc! another ticked box though!
After this we went back to the hostel - went on internet then went for an early bite to eat back at the indian we ate at the first night- my entire meal cost 67 pence! yum! W were getting the overnight train to koh pangnan in Thailand this evening so had to get eating early.
We said our goodbyes to Richard who'd done KL with us, and we went to get the train. We didnt have a clue what to expect so i set myself up for the worst! like a load of locals and chickens in the carriage! We got on and it was fine- we had top bunks facing each other- i slept with my pack and went to sleep like a baby!
16 hours later we arrived in Hat Nai (where we had to get another bus then a ferry) see thailand diary!
