Hey there!
So our next stop after Airlie Beach was Hervey Bay which is basically the gateway to Fraser Island. Fraser is the biggest sand dune in the world and it is a huge island (covered in sand obviously).
We set off in a 4x4 with 8 people in our group and 9 people in the other group. the island can be pretty dangerous and we basically got the crap scared out of us before we left by the tour guide so all of us were on edge for the first few hours. why they let crazy backpackers drive round in big 4x4's on a place with no roads is beyond us! oh well! our group consisted of us two, another english girl called ana who is now our bezzie!, two crazy canadian girls who were hillarious and 3 germans (2 of which had the worst BO problem ever!) there were only actually 4 of us who could drive which was a bit of a challenge at times. laura had been driving for about 30 seconds when we got stuck in a big sand pit and a load of boys had to stop and rescue us!!! funny though!
our first day there we went to a place called Lake Mackenzie where the water is so ridiculously clear and you can drink it, it is that fresh. we cruised on down to the Maheno Shipwreck and then off to the camp site. we were staying at an aboriginal camp and got to see some aboriginal dancing round the camp fire which was fun. we had a big bbq and lots of alcohol (shocker!) and bonded with the group. also got to see a dingo or two! also had to tell the german boy that he stank as we all felt sick!
the next day we went to a freshwater creek (ely creek) which you can float in down to the sea and also a place called indian head where you walk up a big hill and it is right on the edge of the ocean and you can see sharks, turtles etc... we saw no sharks but a couple of turtles. then we went to the champagne pools which we had to walk to coz the frickin car wouldnt get through the sand! rubbish! camped again that night and we had a massive drinking game with some of the new groups and the aboriginal guys that lived there...hillarious until the stupid 31 ozzy guy in the other group decided to spew where we were all about to sleep!
on the last day we went to lake wabby which is so clear and green coloured. beautiful! had a couple of hours back at lake mackenzie and then headed back for the ferry. (hard to explain everywhere you need to check out the photos).
got back to hervey bay, had a shower! and the two groups went out for a big all you can eat chinese which was yummy!
off to noosa next with ana and her german friend laura and hoperfully gonna get an apartment there.
watch this space.
love and miss you all lots
