I fell asleep pretty quickly in our little corner of the airport because of being exhausted from the cycle ride. However, I didn't sleep for very long, and woke up at about 3.30, and couldn't get back to sleep. We checked in at 5.30, and flew at 7 to Portland airport, where Alice's cousin, Stephanie, picked us up and took us back to her house for breakfast (which beat our plan to get pop tarts and coffee from 7 eleven). We had eggs, sausages, toast, fruit and muffins, and then she let us do our washing and have a shower. Because the muffins were from cost co, and we were talking about it, Stephanie took us with her, which felt like a privilege given that you have to pay $100 for membership (but you get discount vouchers at the end of the year), and are only allowed in with a membership card. It's a supermarket where you can bulk buy stuff, and they give away plenty of samples!
When we got back to the house, we tried to book our bus to Alice's other cousins house in Manzanita, which was a huge pain, as you could either print the tickets and pay in cash, or pick the tickets up and pay be card, which is stupid because you couldn't print the tickets and pay by card (like we wanted to do). Stephanie had an assessment to write, as she is a high school teacher, so she dropped us off at the motel, where I had a nap as I hadn't slept that well.
When I woke up, I went to the Whole Foods supermarket which is my favourite supermarket I've been to! I got excited when I saw the scoop and weigh things, like they have in Australia, but there was a huge selection, and then I went round the corner and you could get freshly ground peanut butter, with the peanuts in the top and a k*** to turn to dispense it. It had so many different varieties of rice and granola, and flours like soy flour. They also had a good selection of veggie burgers, and I got a salad from the salad bar which had Kale and tahini salad, edamame beans, cauliflower, celery, and falafels. It seems like such a good place to get dinner (and I'm excited when I can return to cook with the ingredients), for example you can get burritos for $7. I then went to 7 eleven to get a peanut butter snickers for me and Alice to try, and whilst I was there grabbed a coffee with 'Irish Cream' creamer- Stephanie explained what creamer was earlier, and you can lots of different flavours, including peppermint which we had earlier at her house.
When Andy arrived at the hostel, we got ready and caught a bus to Downtown. We didn't really know where we were going, but we got off when the guy next to Andy said we should. We spotted the food carts that had been mentioned in Lonely Planet, and chose one of the Mexican ones, since that was the only one which had a seating area (and it was raining so had shelter). Me and Alice both got burritos, but with extra beans instead of meat, and Andy got some sort of sandwich. I thought mine was a bit tasteless, but that could have been because there was no meat, which might have had more seasoning.
We walked around to have a look for somewhere to drink, but it took a while as the places we were stumbling across at first were either Chinese restaurants (?) or gentlemen clubs, but eventually we found a karaoke bar, which was interesting as it was still quite early on in the night but all the Americans were really getting into it- a reflection on the 'America Dream' that they all want to act like pop stars. We stayed for a bit to enjoy the $2 drinks (and Andy brought us a shot of gin which didn't go down too well), and then headed off to find somewhere else, as it had stopped raining by then. The next place was a bit cooler, although both the men's and women's toilets were blocked, but the club next door let us use them.
Stephanie had told us about Voodoo Doughnuts- the successful donut shop in Portland, and even at 3 in the morning there was a huge queue- apparently it stays open 24 hours! The last place we went to was a place where the barman was a heavy rocker type, and it looked like earlier on in the night there may have been a band on. I was enjoying the debating me and Alice were doing over the film Pineapple Express.
