Had to get cabs from sucre to potosi... Had to go in four cabs, three were fine... one other with rob charlotte abi and amy (not us thankfully!!) was the death cab from hell!!! It could barely go more than 10km/h, they kept having to stop to open the hood to stop the car overheating!! a tyre burst and the spare was a motorcycle tyre...! So after that they had to go even slower!! At one point we had stopped and had to go back to check for them, and we thought they were being towed by a truck!! It turned out that the car was just SO crap that they couldn't overtake and had been stuck behind it for about an hour!! So a trip that was supposed to be quite short ended up taking five hours and we got there in the dark!!! The next day we went to the silver mines, which are the main thing in potosi. You first have to go and buy provisions that you take down the mine and give to any workers you see... like drinks, crackers, alcohol, ammonium nitrate and dynamite... you know, all the average stuff (!!!) Was quite an experience... seeing how these people work underground with such minimal light for such long shifts... apparently some of the longest shifts are 36hrs and shortest is 12hrs! people start working in the mines at about 12yrs old, and depending on what part of the mine you work in, life expectancy can be from only 30yrs. when we were underground we saw a wall that was being planted with dynamite to blow through, then we had walked away and suddenly we heard these massive BOOMS and the whole place shook!! I was seriously s***ting myself!!! The parts of the mine I went into weren't too claustrophobic, only one tight squeeze, but still ducking heads most of the time watching out for "hole on the left", "Hole on the right"! then some of us came out and others, including mark, went down further into the mines into smaller parts! Quite scary to think of people's lives being spent down a mine. When everyone was up, there was some dynamite left over, so mark helped the guide make a bomb!! with the dynamite, ammonium nitrate and a fuse of nitroglycerin!! Then went to set them off far away and then RAN!! BIG explosions! mark loved it!!
