We arrived in Siem Riep and after being mobbed by Tuk Tuk drivers when we got off the bus, we chose a guy who was just standing there quietly, we booked into a hotel with a crocodile farm in the backyard. We arranged to go to Angkor for the sunset, so climbed up steep steps to the top of a temple, to see that ever other b***** had decided to do the same, it was very crowded. It was quite pretty tho, my rugby training came into force when numerous japanese or korean people tried to shove me out the way to get a better view. A roaming monkey was steakling peoples food and drink and when a man tried to get his stuff back the monkey attacked him, i hate monkeys. The town is very modern with loads of funky bars and restaurants so we had no problems finding someshere to eat. We got up early the next day and saw quite a few temples, the one that was in Tomb Raider was cool, overgrown with trees and tumbledown, as an archaeologist i imagined i was just like lara croft except with a trowel rather than guns...they dont dig as well. Went to the Bayon temple which is the one with all the carved faces and did the smaller temples in Angkor Thom. It was really cool to see all the places the the temperature was getting unbearable and the place was getting pretty crowded so by midday we'd had enough and decided to return the next day. Went back to the hotel and made the most of the aircon. Layne bought a really tacky but kinda retro glass block with Angkor carved inside...it lights up all different colours, nice. Got up early, 5am, to see the sunrise over Angkor Wat, it was worth it as the sun looked really cool rising behind the towers and then we had a look around and it was brill cos it was sooo quiet, like we had the place to ourselves. Visited about 4 other temple complexes but my fav was one that was really overgrown and tumbledown in the middle of the jungle, we were almost the only ones there. By 12 it had gotten too hot again so we went back for lunch. We bought 10 postcards from a landmine victim who had no hands and 1 foot, its very sad there were lots of them about. Then layne got conned into buying 10 more postcards by a boy who challanged him to 3 games of Os and Xs, if layne won he would get 10 free postcards, if he lost her would have to buy more.....obviously Layne lost and had to but the cards (which cost 1dollar more than the other set) so now we had 20 bloody cards...great! Met Claire and Dave for drinks and enjoyed cocktails for 75p, bargin, i felt rought the next day, nice!
