Not a bad night and Jenny feeling better in the morning. We decided to breakfast in the Albergue which was provided in the small kitchen around a large breakfast table with our hostess doing her ironing as we ate! As she ironed her fitted sheets, we munched through rusk like biscuits, margarine, jam and cake. About half way through she threw a carton of fruit juice at us. Not at all in the same league as a Bills breakfast! - Boris and co were obviously right about British superiority over these Europeans! After being told to shhhhhhhh we decided it was time to leave. We joined the way which was flanked by vineyards. After a couple of hours we came upon a cafe in a little village called Ventosa. We fell into some chairs outside. Fiona and I drew the short straw and sat on very wet seats so had that alluring incontinence look for the next few hours. The cafe had an interesting menu featuring plates of large or small inlay!!!! and hard sausage and cheese sandwiches. Not being blessed with male company we were forced to make our own double entendres a la Frankie Howard in Up Pompeii!! We bought bocadillos and set off after our caffeine fix. It was still quite chilly and we were still not joined by many pilgrims but the scenery was lovely and, in particular, the poppies by the wayside. We came across playing a guitar and the Brazilian artist was chatting to him - we thought he must have set off early or be a fast walker to be ahead of us as he didn't look the fittest peregrino - he was a bit of a chubby little chappy truth be told. We stumbled across some picnic tables and decided to stop for lunch. It was a bit of a skank environment with rubbish and dog poo - but when hunger strikes us pilgrims don't give a ****. In the distance we saw a couple of men approaching, pushing a pram, accompanied by a black and white pointer. As we passed them we saw the pram was full of puppies!! The men gave us toothless grins and carried on past. Jenny and I suddenly thought of the reservoir we had passed the day before (in which direction they were heading) and thought the worst! For the last part of the journey Fiona's knees were swelling up and rain clouds were hanging over our heads and so we were especially pleased to reach Najera. After doing our usual circuit of the town using a rubbish map in the guide book we found our hostel which was fab! There were Spanish newspapers at reception covered in Brexit news in Spanish! Although we couldn't translate the headlines it certainly did not look good! I googled what was happening and it seemed the fallout was starting big time at home. Hilary Benn had been sacked for criticising Jeremy Corbyn, Farage had reneged on the NHS promise, Europe wanted us to go asap, Boris was being uncharacteristically sheepish and a petition to Government to hold another referendum was gaining momentum on social media! We had 3 lovely twin rooms with real sheets and towels! What a treat! We relaxed, showered, dried hair with a real hairdryer (thank you Jenny for bringing your babyliss big hair device - I can't imagine why it isn't listed as a Camino essential in all the guide books!) Anne spent some time counselling Ric******* the phone who was clearly suffering an extreme form of Post Brexit Stress Disorder. He had, however, obviously heard about the success of Jenny's self medication technique and ordered himself a 'I was one of the 48%' T shirt!! so we all hoped this would provide him with some temporary relief! Roomies ,Anne and Sue, went to look for a bit of culture and we joined them later in a bar by the river to have our Camino Cocktails (Beers!). They had been to look around the monastery and church of Santa Maria la Real. It was tricky to find somewhere to eat as it was still only about 7 o'clock and little was open but we found somewhere eventually- although we had to split up. Food and wine average!. Back to a single bed with sheets -LUSH! More depressing Brexit bedtime stories, updates from Blighty from Jenny Rowan and then sleep. Things lost - Sue lost her mascara Times Jenny mentioned the moonwalk - 12
