Referendum day! Leaving on an evening flight meant we all had time to vote to stay in the EU. Torrential rain set in late afternoon as we all made our way to Gatwick, Jacqui driving Sue and I and Richard taking Anne, Jenny and Fiona thank goodness! If we had had to make our own way to the airport in that weather we would have got drenched before we even started! Delays, departure boards not working, little information, confusion reigned - was this a sign of things to come?????? Jenny was in telephone negotiations over the delivery of an ASDA shop which resulted in her reaching a high state of anxiety! Fortunately, as a doctor, she knew how to self medicate in these circumstances and quickly took herself off to Jo Malone and bought some orange blossom body lotion. Although not in a state of high anxiety like Jenny, Jacqui went shopping too and came back with a very bright (almost dayglo) pink hat! We would not lose her on the Camino that was for sure - a few days later some of us were to wish that Fiona had bought something similar (more on that in the Ages to Burgos section later in this blog!) We discussed Brexit and the general feeling (apart from me) was that remain would win with a small majority. The bookies supported this view as did the financial markets so it looked likely. I had just had a bad feeling since watching the adoration of Boris on the EU Big Debate on the BBC a few days earlier. Eventually we boarded our Vueling flight and began to look forward to a little well deserved 'we are on holiday after all' tipple which eventually came in the form of white and red Rioja - nectar! We arrived in Bilbao around midnight and took taxis to our hostel (opposite Athletico Bilbao football stadium) - we were tired pilgrims but happy with our rooms (with real towels!) - collapsing on our beds we went to sleep knowing the Brexit result was now only hours away!
