I woke up at about 6 and immediately reached for my phone and glasses. I felt sick reading the BBC Breaking news headlines that Brexit was almost certain. Jenny woke up and I shared the bad news, Jacqui was soon awake too and we were all in a state of shock! And then it was confirmed the UK had voted to leave the EU 52% to 48%! As tired as we were we couldn't go back to sleep and needed coffee and so we quickly dressed and found the nearest cafe. 8 coffees and 2 Jamon rolls later we were no nearer getting our heads around this terrible disaster that had happened overnight in our country - we spent the time incredulously reading the headlines, Facebook, Twitter, messaging and whatsapping friends and family against a backdrop of Spanish news on the TV in the bar endlessly showing shots of London, union jacks and David Cameron resigning. After some time we were getting a bit concerned that our 3 travelling companions had not appeared and didn't seem to be answering our texts. We had made allowances for Anne's love of a lie in but still!! So back to the hostel and to sudden panicky messages from the others (who had not put their clocks forward) that we had only 10 minutes to get the bus. We checked out and ran to the bus station and made the 10 o'clock bus by the skin of our teeth. For most of the journey we were all still reeling with shock from the news and at the time of writing (Sunday) none of us seem to feel any differently- so I will leave detailing more the subject of Brexit and its fallout and turn to the task in hand - this blog!!! We arrived in Logrono and the sun came out - what a different place it looked from the last time we were here in September 2015 in the rain. The centre of the city was beautiful and we returned to have lunch quite near to where we had stayed last year. Lovely to sit outside in the sun and get out our sunglasses and sun hats (for Fiona please substitute lampshade for sun hat!!!!). We over ordered but it was yummy salad and tortilla and we simply convinced ourselves we were filling up our tanks for the days walking ahead and , after all, Anne, Jacqui and Sue had not had breakfast! And then it was time! To do what we had come here for -WALK!! Off we set to find our first yellow arrow and Camino shell confident that this year we were indeed a more colour co-ordinated unit! !! We picked it up not far outside the centre and we were off! The sun had disappeared and it started to get a bit chilly. We walked to the edge of the city and the way took us through endless vineyards - well we were in Rioja!! We came upon a huge reservoir after about an hour and the thunder and lightening and rain began - very fitting on this doomsday! After about 3 hours we hit Navarette - we had seen hardly any pilgrims en route and there only appeared to be a few in Navarette - strange! As usual we couldn't find the hostel and got into an awkward exchange with a helpful man who seemed to want to book us in somewhere else!!Eventually we got our message across and a few minutes later found el Cantara with the help of an Australian guy who ran another hostel and told us about his lovely Paella! We promised to return! Nice hostel with wooden bunks and lockers. Our room had about 16 beds and the showers were good - result!! Tour Guide Anne had done it again! Showered and changed, Jo Malone and lippy on we found the Aussie's albergue and got those beers in!!! The Aussie guy was called Matt and he told us he ran the Albergue with his boyfriend Michael, a German who had done the Camino 5 times. They had met the year before on the Camino. We were joined by a South Korean boy and Brazilian man but we had no common tongue. The Brazilian showed us a photo of a beautiful painting he had done of the way and Matt told us he was painting murals up the stairway of the Albergue and invited us to take a look after our Paella. They depicted the story of the Camino over the centuries and were lovely indeed! During the tour he shared quite a bit about his life in Australia and family and his love and belief in the way showing you the way! It was his answer to Brexit but we were not convinced! Back at the hostel Jenny had hatched a good plan to get the bottom bunk. She had a funny tummy (we will never know the truth ha ha!). Things lost - Fiona lost her phone and the U.K. Lost Europe! Number of times Jenny mentioned the moonwalk -7 What a day!!
