I'm sat in an air-conditioned room in our hostel in Bangkok, Thailand at 11pm and its still ridiculously hot! I thought I'd do a blog on Hong Kong and reflections on China before writing about Thailand.
Hong Kong is an incredible place...I don't like cities but there's something about HK. The second we got there we noticed how British it was and how multi-cultural it was...again very British! We stayed in a building called Chungking Mansions...not quite as good as it sounds. It is a cesspit of a building dumped bang in the middle of the expensive main waterfront area of Kowloon. Apart from the Cockroaches it was exactly what we wanted, great location and best of all half of India seemed to live in the building and made the best curries for a pound you'll ever eat!After a curry and a beer we ventured out to the waterfront only for the heavens to open and the typhoon to hit soaking us beyond belief! The Peninsula hotel had even boarded up its door, locked its many Rolls Royce away and sand bagged everything! We had 4 days in HK which is just about enough. In the 4 days we bartered in cheap shops in Kowloon, Drank in Lan Kwai Fong , ate in Soho, sat on the beach in Stanley and gazed down at HK from Victoria Peak after getting the tram up to the top. As I said I don't like cities but 4 have really amazed me: London, Sydney, Barcelona and now Hong Kong. If you get the chance then go but take a LOT of money with you!Going back in time a few days we left Wuhan on the 10 hour train to Guangzhou overnight. We got there at 6am, walked about 2k then got a bus to Macau where we had to go through immigration and officially left the country I couldn't quite fathom, China. We instantly liked Macau, after 3 weeks of street life in poor towns arriving in a city that is effectively one massive casino could not have been better! It's a strange place because there is a distinctive Portuguese feel from when they once owned it giving it a western feel but also showed what China could be like. We ate then waltzed into the Grand Lisboa and came out HK$7 up…that's 50p in English money! We lost it all and the other HK$50 we scrupulously budgeted beforehand in the Wynn and MGM. I'll post some pics of the Venitian which we went to the next day…it's ridiculous…Venice canals intact on the 3rd floor of a building that dominates an Island.

Sorry about the length of this blog but HK was truly amazing, a place I will definitely be going back to. I'll leave it there and crack on with my overview of China before going to the Tiger Temple in Kanchanaburi tomorrow!
