After 18 hours of travelling, we made it to Bangkok, the city of squalor (which if you look through our photos you'll see it was literally). Culture shock hit us both as soon as we got out of the taxi from the airport with tuktuks hounding us the second we stepped out of the car. After being told every horror story going by locals trying to get us to change hotel, we checked in to our hotel on Khao San Road.
Now Khao San Road is a funny place with a million and one people trying to sell you everything from tuk tuk rides to scorpions on a stick, and at night doubles up as the place to party. Had we known this whilst checking in, I'm sure Emma wouldn't have wanted a room with a window, however after requesting one we found we were overlooking the loudest stretch of the strip.
First night, despite being tired we decided to see what Bangkok had in store for us. After being told about a night market festival taking place we took a tuktuk across town via a few temples (and suit shops). On arriving at the night market and grabbing something to eat we soon realised we were also in Bangkok's red light district with pingpong shows galore. After a quick beer we decided to take one in and what a mistake that was....of course we got shafted. After an expensive ride back to the hotel we realised that sleep was impossible with the bars literally outside our window (good one em). Tired and rather a lot of money down it ended Bangkok 1 - Emma and kynton 0.
Breakfast was early and limited choice of food we set off to meet our new Tuk Tuk friend for a tour of Bangkok and some of its finest temples and Buddhas! Little did we know that we would be also driving to another twenty suit shops between each temple... With Kynton almost getting beat up by a Thai guy after agreeing to get measured up for a suit and not intending to buy one (well done) we quickly fled the suit shop and jumped back on the tuk tuk... Off to the sleeping Buddha! With beautiful temples and amazing views all in all was a decent morning/afternoon in Bangkok even if our Tuk Tuk driver decided to abandon us because we didn't want to buy any jewellery or suits from his friends! After arriving back to Khao San food was much needed then a cheeky few buckets and beers was soon to follow! the night ended in the loudest and busiest bar on the strip (Shamrocks) a cheeky Irish bar two doors away from our hotel... We met another couple who joined us a beer or 10 and the night ended with us both a bit too steaming and strolling to bed as the sun was already out (630 in the morning)... Bangkok 1 - Kynton and Emma 1.
Now the late night definitely took its toll on us, with us rising out of bed well after midday, we sought hungover comfort in the pool. With a very low key day and getting travel ready for our next day departure, a few drinks and some street food finished off our stop in the capital. Until next time Bangkok, roll on Koh Chang.
