Tue 5 Jun - Bus to journey from Oaxaca to Puebla. Nothing eventful, went for the now traditional beer in the central square as we arrived then found a trendy part of town for a pizza. Trendy part of town it appears is near a canal / river and therefore got bit to death by mosquitos - cool!
Wed 6 Jun - Puebla is famous for putting a chocolate sauce on chicken dishes and having lots of churches and both are very nice. Did a tour on an open topped bus and burnt ours arses on the plastic seats and nearly got garrotted by the overhead telephone wires everywhere (duck now!) - very funny. Huge thunderstorm that night with purple lightening but we were safe in a bar with cheap beer.
Thu 7 Jun - Took a bus from Puebla to Guanajuato via Mexico City. The trip went okay despite first hailing a one-armed taxi driver but when we arrived we were screwed from the journey and booked into the first hostel we saw despite doubts. Hostel was a sushi bar and to get to the bathroom and shower you had to walk through the restaraunt itself, errr! Got wrecked in nearby student bar for v.little money.
Fri 8 Jun - Guanajuato is a beautiful little town in the hills (and we chaged hostels to avoid putting people off their raw fish) not in the normal mould of Mexican towns with their block layout, but lots of rambling streets and alleys to explore and get lost in. They used to have a river running through the middle of it which they diverted and made it into a road and then dug loads more tunnels to accomodate the traffic and the result is weird, tranquil squares with all the traffic disappearing down little ratholes everywhere.
Sat 9 Jun - Visited the museum of the mummies in Guanajuato. Due to the climate and the soil dead bodies dry out before they can rot and within 5 years you have yourself a mummy! If the relatives cannot afford to keep the burial plot the body is dug up and cremated or displayed if no-one claims it. Due to skin contraction they all had the mouths open in sort of an Eduard Munch type scream - quite horrific really!
Sun 10 Jun - Still in Guanajuato and went to the main museum - to get in free mainly because it was a Sunday and got charged because we were foreigners despite our best Mexican impersonations!
Mon 11 Jun - Found another square in Guanajuato which was an opportunity to spend more time drinking beer watching the world going by and not doing much else.
Tue 12 Jun - Took a bus to Guadalajara. Been to nearby Puerto Vallarta three times before on normal holidays and always missed the tours to Guadalajara and thought it was time to make amends. First thoughts are its a bit crap - wahey! Cannot believe how many shops are selling bridal gowns, literally every other shop - bit weird!
Wed 13 Jun - Lazy day debating where we should go next. Only cheap flights are to the States it seems. Find a supermarket and get some very very cheap bottles of Mexican wine and have picnic on the balcony and all of a sudden its midnight!
Thu 14 Jun - Get up at 1.00pm not entirely without a headache. Decided to go to Puerto Vallarta tomorrow and sod the fact we already know it too well.
