Although I've only been here for a few days I'm already loving Mexico. And I know Cancun doesn't really count as a stereotypical Mexican town... But we're not staying where all the hotels and night clubs are. The hostel is just outside the city and only a 10 minute bus ride to the beach, which was one of the best looking beaches I think I've been to since travelling. Rivalling the maya beach in Thailand where 'the beach' was filmed; and even some in the Philippines. Was not expecting such nice beaches here. I've always been a big fan of Mexican food, making tacos and enchiladasv x at home. But the food here is amazing, can get tacos, enchiladas, burritos or beans rice and chicken for less than a pound. Love it.!
We didn't really make full advantage of the hostel, socialising etc.. We've been soo far behind on updating our blogs and sorting out visas, taxes and planning where we're going next. So it was nice just to sit down and utilise working wifi for a change. But now that I'm pretty much sorted, I can enjoy just travelling again.!
Tulum was definitely a good call to stop off at. One of the only places in the world to see a senote, which are naturally formed lakes from the eventual erosion of the limestone walls. Well the senote we visited was 4km into a jungle and then we had to go down some man made steps into a tiny tiny hole in the ground... Well we were instantly in an underground cave surrounded by the clearest water.! There were stalagmites and stalagtights forming from the ceiling and floor, and some even met and made thick columns. There was a group of about 20 of us that went from the hostel and we were the only ones in this senote. The owner of the hostel took an underwater torch with him and there was another guy staying at the hostel who was just getting into free diving so the three of us we swimming down and exploring holes and tunnel systems and seeing how far we could go out and round. This was why I started free diving, so I could just go out with a snorkel and explore areas and see places you can't see from the top. Was amazing to swim down and pull yourself through underwater Columns and holes and just shine the torch and a never ending tunnel. The senote's are said to all be linked with miles of underground tunnels, but most of them unexplored because they're too long. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience.
