Cuba from the off set, even before we arrived has been one massive headache.! Trying to ring all of the embassy's we could, Australia, England and even Cuba to try and sort our visa out.. Turned out we were able to fill out a form at Mexico City airport and we had our visa straight away... That easy..! Shame no one was able to tell us that.! Now I know we're in a foreign country and you shouldn't expect them to just be able to speak English.. But literally no one in Cuba speaks English.! So we're having to get by with sloppy broken Spanish... Which it turns out is completely different to Spanish Spanish. Different words and what sounds like a completely mumbled Spanish. Not the easiest trying to sort bus tickets out, or anything really when you can't really communicate or ask people stuff. It took us 3 days to finally book our ticket to Cayo coco.. And even though the tickets were booked, we couldn't be certain that they it'd turn up.. Because apparently in Cuba you can't rely on stuff, and sometimes the busses just don't turn up..
After we had finally finished booking our ticket we could actually enjoy Havana a bit more and walk around the city. Well some of the architecture around the city was stunning.! A lot of it was run down and some falling down but it was great just to walk through the old high buildings, majority of them were all 4 stories high. And every now and then an old American Cadillac would just come piddling down the road.! It's weird, there's no real modern cars in Cuba, only a few that the cab drivers have, just all old American and soviet cars left over from the Cold War. But pretty much all of the Cadillacs were well looked after and spotless.! Never a scratch on them and always buffed up perfectly. All were in the wackiest of colours.. Pinks.. Yellows.. Purples. I thought it was ironic how Cuba wants nothing to do with America, yet one of the biggest tourist attractions is to drive around the city in old American cars for extortionate prices..
One thing I enjoyed about Havana was the food... Shock.. They don't really have supermarkets like we do... People just come round with different groceries and shout up to the houses as they walk through the streets and people just lower little baskets with the money in and in and up goes the food. Funny to see happen. But we used to go to little corner stalls, which are actually just people's front rooms that they'd put a sign up outside with food prices, and we could get breakfast luck and dinner for less than 3 dollars.. Breakfast usually consisted of a cheese and ham toasty with bananas. Lunch was an omelette roll with a half a mango and a banana. And dinner we used to get a chicken leg and rice and spicy beans and potato.. Lush it was.!
Can definitely tell Cuba's a third world country. They don't actually have wifi here. You have to buy wifi cards for a couple of quid and head to wifi hotspots to connect... And even then it still doesn't work. Which normally I wouldn't mind. But when we were trying to organise things and book buses it was a real pain... So they also don't have 3G or 4g.. Hardly anyone have mobile phones.. So we were always seeing people using pay phones on the side of buildings probably only able to ring land lines.. It's like their over 20 years behind western worlds.!When we finally arrived at Cayo coco... It was like heaven.. A 5* resort, 5 pools, right on the beach, a massive twin room with working aircon and as much food and booze as you could fit in your stomach.! Well we definitely got our money's worth at the bar and the buffet.. Literally rolled out of the restaurant everyday. It was nice to be able to just chill on the beach and catch some sun finally.! Ever since we left for New Zealand at the start of May we've been busy travelling, moving around and seeing stuff. Was a well needed sit down after all that time. It was good seeing Rose and Dean again.! They did have us in stitches the whole time.!! We did see jords birthday in in a true Caribbean style.. drinking rum and smoking a cigar till the early hours.!
