In El Salvador we met up with a friend we met in Malaysia a year and a half ago who was in charge of selecting volunteers for the hotel la Tortuga. A hotel and turtle sanctuary. Wasn't a bad place to settle down for a week and have a bit of chill time. Because we were only there for a week instead of a month like your supposed to stay, we weren't put on the workers rota so for a week we just rocked up and tried to find things to do at the hotel, usually just some raking of mango leaves or helping out in the kitchen and bringing the boat in and out of the sea. We were super lucky that on our first and second day we actually got to release baby turtles back into the sea. The hotel was also a sanctuary for injured Pelicans. Those that had broken their wings from diving in the sea to catch fish, the hotel takes them in and usually amputates the wing. We actually assisted in one of the operations, the Pelican was having its whole wing taken off. Was pretty gruesome as I was stood behind the vet and could see him cut, clamp and sew every artery. The worse was probably when he was sawing through the bone, the noise was like fingernails down a chalk board. Sadly the bird did die from shock I think, this was the second amputation it was having and wasn't even put under. Overall it was a pretty chilled week of 'work' went out in the sea and surfed most of the time but was good to get some free accommodation and cheap food for a week.!
