Kya Travels
This morning we got up, packed and cleaned up the apartment. There's a 500 kroner (~$100) fee for if you don't clean up after yourself, so we did that, then chilled out for a while. We left our bags at reception then walked down to the supermarket to return our empty beer bottles. They give you one kroner back per bottle if you return them for recycling which is pretty awesome. Then we realized we'd left our breakfast (apples) in the fridge at the apartment, so we went back to get those, then went for another walk down the Viking path from yesterday to go to the beach there. It was another beautiful day, so we thought we'd brave the water and go for a swim! (Our first swim of the holiday!!) The water was icy cold, and there was no sand, just rocks, so it was very hard to take it! We went in to our knees then chickened out! We walked up along the beach a bit to a part where the rocks were smaller to try again. Darren looked like he was going to go in, then chickened out again, so I went in and took one for the team! It was soooo cold!! But at least it made the boys go in too! They couldn't be beaten by a girl!! After our swim we sat in the sun for a while to dry off a bit, then had to head back. As we headed off, Darren reached into his pocket and realized the iPod had gone for a swim with him too!! Oops! It wouldn't turn on or do anything either... So we headed back anyway, picked up our bags and dropped by the supermarket for a bag of rice to put the iPod in, even though its probably been too long by the time we walked back! We also got some snacks, then went out to the wharf where we waited for a little bit then jumped on the ferry. Lyle went up to the top deck, and Darren and I got an ice cream and stayed inside, where we had a bit of a snooze on the seats there. We had a three hour ferry trip so we weren't too worried about missing out on the beauty, plus we could see pretty well from inside anyway. At one of the stops, Darren said "oh no, look who it is!", and without even turning around I knew it was the American 'one family' from the train to Bergen! Hilarious! The ferry wasn't very full so we joked with them about how we saved them a seat, and they made some drama while finding space for all their luggage, then Darren and I got another ice cream and went to sit up on the top deck for a while to check out the views. We were pretty much sailing down a river with massive (some even snow capped) mountains all around us, it was amazing. But it was cold up there so I didn't last long! I went back down into the cabin and we just chilled out and watched the mountains pass by. We arrived in Nordheimsund and went to line up for the connecting bus to Bergen. The American family were lined up behind us, and making more drama as there was no room for their luggage so the dad pushed through everyone in the line and made sure the driver knew they were 'one family' and there was no room for their luggage. Obviously the driver couldn't do much about it as he was on the bus checking tickets for the other 30ish people in the line, so they had to wait! While we were in line, a guy came over from a taxi and asked if we were a group of three, cos he had three spare seats in his cab for people going to Bergen. So we grabbed our bags and headed over there while Mr America tried to get his family on the taxi too, even though there weren't enough seats! So we got our little 16 seater taxi to Bergen rather than the massive bus. It was a very pretty drive through the mountains and an hour and a half later we arrived at the Bergen bus station. The next bus out to our hostel wasn't for another hour-ish so I tried to figure out which way to go so we might try start to walk, but my maps app on my phone wasn't being very nice to me, and I couldn't figure out which direction to go, so we waited for the bus to the hostel. When we were getting close the maps were stuffing up again, and so we just got off so we didn't miss the stop, and when we did the driver was kind of looking at us probably cos we were looking lost, and asked if we were going to Montana, and told us to get back on! When we got there he let us know too! So nice of him! So we got to the hostel and checked in and dropped off our bags. The hostel had a BBQ on that night, where you bring your own food and drinks, so there were heaps of people hanging around outside. There was an awesome outside area too, with a bit that you could climb up onto the rocks for an amazing view over Bergen. We went for a walk down to the supermarket, but it was closed and apparently there weren't any restaurants close by, so we went back to the hostel and ordered some pizza, which they do there. We sat on the rocks looking at the view while we waited, then went in to eat. It was pretty plain, but the bases were homemade and tasty. After dinner we went to have a walk around the place, which seemed a little like a ghost town... Where we were staying was a residential area and quite high up on a hill, so we started making our way down the zigzagging streets, and cutting through on steep pedestrian stairs where they had them. We got to the main road and kept walking an it was still a ghost town! Nothing was happening at all! At least the slugs were still out... We eventually turned back and went to one of the only open shops, which was a pizza place, where Lyle got a chicken salad cos he was still hungry, Darren got some ice cream and I shared that and had a coffee. We amused ourselves by reading the menu and trying to work out what all the different words meant. I was actually getting pretty good at it! Or at least at reading the words, I probably still wouldn't know it if someone was saying it to me! After that we made our way back up all the stairs and through the winding streets, which was a workout in itself, and went back to the hostel and to bed. We had a pretty ****** nights sleep, as our room mate was very sick, and we kept getting woken up by mega coughing fits, so bad it almost sounded like he was spewing! We better not catch this bug too, or I will NOT be happy!! At one stage him and Lyle were having a snoring competition too! Argh!!
