Kya Travels
We got up this morning, packed and checked out and jumped on a tram to the central train station. We went in and found our platform, waited for the train and found our seats. At 7 hours, this will be the longest train ride I've ever done, and apparently it is the worlds most scenic train ride! There was an American family sitting behind us, who had stuffed up their tickets by not booking all at once, so their seats were separated. And they made sure everyone knew about it, and that everyone knew they were 'one family'. It was only by about 3 rows, and they weren't trying to make a scene, they were just being the most stereotypical obnoxious Americans. I put on my headphones and spent the next 45 minutes blissing out to brand new's album, Daisy. It was the best! It's been too long since I've listened to them! The next 5-6 hours passed pretty uneventfully, there were more dramas in the American camp, I had a snooze, listened to more music, got some food at the on board cafe... We got to a stop called Myrdal, where the majority of the people on the train got off, as it was the stop for the Norway in a Nutshell tour. So we had a much emptier train for the last two hours of the journey! And the scenery! Oh my god it was amazing! We rode past massive mountains, covered in snow, past beautiful waterfalls and along cliff faces looking down into pretty lakes! It was magic! At one point, as we were going through the mountains, there were heaps of tunnels that we were going through, I assume to keep the snow off the tracks, so every time you got an amazing view of something, you'd be back inside the tunnel before you had a chance to show anyone! Finally we made it to our destination, Bergen. We got off the train (yay!), picked up our Hardangerfjord in a nutshell tickets and worked out which way to go, before heading out to walk the 10 or so minutes to our hostel. When we got there we went upstairs to check in, then headed down to our dorm. Our 32 bed dorm! It was massive! Like a warehouse filled with bunks! We found our beds and put our linen on. The bed Lyle was given was taken, so he had to go up and sort that out. The reception guy came down, and moved the stuff off the bed, and put a note on it, and gave Lyle new sheets. Then we headed out to check out the town. We stopped at a few places having a look at the menus, and headed down to the Bryggen Wharf. It's a row of really old colorful buildings set on the wharf. We walked in and around the wharf, then went back past our hostel and up to a pub called Three Lions for a drink. We had a chat to the bartender there, and she played us some norwegian bands while we had our drink. She also gave us a list of bands so we could look them up later. That was awesome. Next we headed to the bottle shop and grabbed a few drinks each and went up to the hostels common room to have a drink. We were joined by Arianne from Germany, and Fabio from Switzerland, and we all had a bit of a joke and a laugh, and tried to see how high we could stack our cans... When they saw how much fun we were having, we were joined by Ros and Callista, both from England. They brought some cards to the table so we could play drinking games, but we were pretty much out of drinks, so it didn't really work! We were joined at the table by Riyas, from India, who knew of a pub that had pretty cheap drinks, so we all went out together to go there. We walked about 10 minutes to get there, then were told at the door that we couldn't all go in, as Darren was wearing thongs and Arianne didn't have her ID on her! Riyas and the English girls were already in there, so we just went to the pub next door. They didn't check ID at the door, but they did when we ordered, so we couldn't stay there either! We decided to go back to the area around the hostel to find somewhere else. I went back next door to tell Riyas where we were going, and he told us about a place called the Tonga Bar, which was near the hostel, that had some good drink deals. We stopped at the hostel for shoes and ID then went around the corner to the Tonga Bar. They had a deal on coronas, 5 for 150 kroner, which works out at about $6 each. So still pretty expensive, but awesome for Norway! (Better than those $16 beers!) The other guys met us there after a while, and we kept drinking and having fun. There were a bunch of Norwegian guys there on a bucks night, and Riyas knew the buck, so we got talking to them for a while. Callista left at some stage, because she was super drunk. I was talking to the Norwegians for a bit, and they were teaching me a whole bunch of norwegian words, which was pretty fun, but I don't remember any of it, as I may or may not have been pretty drunk by then! I remember 'skol', which means cheers, and 'gratuleri' which means congratulations, and that's about it! After a while when we were big old drunky drunks we must have headed back to the hostel and found our beds cos that where we woke up!
