Kya Travels
We woke up today and had some leftover pizza for breakfast before meeting the boys and Ibrahim downstairs. We hired a van which was out the front to take us to the medina, then paid and went into the Palace Bahia. We got a tour through the gardens and rooms of the palace and got to see some awesome architecture from a loooong time ago! After the palace we walked back out past the orange trees, out the gates and across the road to the herbologists. In there, a lady showed us how they extracted the oil from the argon nuts, and then we went into a little back room which was full of jars of all sorts of different herbs, spices, roots, dyes, powders and lots more! She gave us a sample of all sorts of different creams and soaps and oils all made with argon oil, and another girl in there gave us all a 10-15 minute neck and shoulder massage each! It was pretty cool. Darren got a drink to settle his stomach as something hadn't agreed with him over the last few days, then we thanked them and headed off. Ibrahim led us through the medina a bit and we passed an African musician who was busking there. Darren got up and tried to play some of his castanets with him, and wear one of his hats which had a string that he was spinning in circles! Darren wasn't quite as good as him (by a long shot!) but gave it a go! It was pretty awesome. We walked around the medina to the tombs, where all the family of the dynasty were buried. We had a look through there, looking at the amazing architecture of the tombs and burial houses. The tombs were covered in a mosaic lid, and none of them were marked with any writing, so you didn't know who was buried there. For them it is enough that the people there were family. There were some pretty cute little kittens in the grounds there, one was so small it could've probably fit in the palm of my hand! And they had the cutest bright blue eyes too! Once again I wanted to take them home with me! After the tombs we walked through the souks for a bit, past the main square and to a souvenir shop for a quick look round before heading to a little cafe for lunch. It was crazy hot by then and we were very happy to be led to the terrace which was shaded and had misting hose things which sprayed us very lightly while we sat there. That was so nice! I got a salad and the boys shared some kebabs (though the mince one was still pink inside so they erred on the side of caution and left them on the plate!). After lunch we went back through the souks and out to the main square where there were some snake charmers! This snake was much more lively than the one we'd seen in Meknes, and kept trying to attack the charmers' drums and feet and whatever they put in its face! Lindsay made a deal with them and they got him to sit on the pavement and took some cool photos with the snake. After that we said goodbye to Ibrahim who wanted us to get a taxi by ourselves, for a 'real life' experience! Darren had a bit of a bargaining session with them and got the fare for 40 dirhams (~$5) and we jumped in the cab. We got back to the hotel and the driver was stoked when we paid him 50, then Darren and I went to the pool for a swim. We went to use the wifi when we got out but it wasn't working, which was annoying, so we just went up to the room and had a bit of a snooze and watched some TV. That night at about 7, we met up with the boys and Ibrahim again and got a taxi back to the medina where Ibrahim pointed out a few things for us to see and do, then we said a final goodbye to him. Apparently the square here has such a different atmosphere at night so we walked around for a bit but decided to get some dinner first. We went to a restaurant called Al Bakaha, which was a crazy expensive place, but served alcohol. After looking at the menu, we decided we'd get one set menu and just share it, but when we ordered, we were told we weren't allowed to just have one! So we ordered a bottle of wine to share while we had another look at the menu. Another waiter came over and said we were allowed to share one between us when we asked, but then the other guy came back and said we couldn't again! Sometimes he came and made a joke with us and other times he kind of seemed to make snide comments at us. It was so confusing, and seemed a bit rude for such a fancy place! Eventually we convinced them to let us have just one menu, and were glad we did, because there was so much food! I wasn't even very hungry, which turned out to be good, because the 'vegetarian' couscous had lamb in it! So I just ate a bunch of the entree salads. After our desserts and tea all came out and got eaten, and another bottle of wine later, we finished up and left the restaurant. As we came out, we could see what he meant about the square! It was packed and it was going off! We walked through past all sorts of merchants - henna women, storytellers, musicians and that kind of thing, then as we stopped to have a look at one of the things a lady grabbed my hand and started giving me a henna tattoo!! I kept trying to stop her, while telling her I literally had no money in my wallet, but didn't want to pull away and have a huge crazy black line or something on my hand for a month! So yeah, I got got. When she finished she tried to charge me 400 dirhams!!! (~$50), and I kept trying to tell her I've been telling her I had no money, and eventually Darren bartered her down to 200 dirhams, and the boys paid her 160, which is all we had between us. They pointed us in the direction of the ATM and we left them. We passed some more crazy things, like a man with a monkey on a chain, wearing a diaper! We found an ATM and got some cash then headed back to pay our other 40 dirhams to the henna lady (even though I didn't want to!) then kept walking through the square. Lindsay had a monkey jump on him, and got a photo, then the man threw it onto Keith's back as he was walking away! So he had to pay for a photo too! Keith ended up getting two monkeys on him and one of them was playing with his hair! We kept walking around as Lindsay was looking for someone to write his name in Arabic, and after asking a few people who had no idea, we found an artist who could do it, and painted it in glitter on a canvas for him. Then we found a sticker for the guitar in a souvenir shop, then slowly made our way back through the square. We stopped so Darren and I could get a photo with a couple of monkeys, then made our way to the taxi rank. We made a deal with a driver for 50 dirhams to our hotel, and then he tried to split us into two cars with a driver who didn't agree to the deal, so we left them and crossed the road to find a taxi that would take us all in one car. We found one and went back to the hotel. After washing the monkey smell from our hands, and the top henna layer from my arm, we went next door to the lounge, which is part of the hotel, and had a drink and a shisha pipe. The man put coals on the top ad started it off for us and we all had a try of the shisha. It almost tasted minty and made us a little light headed after a while. It was a cool experience, but I probably wouldn't be in any rush to do it again! They called last drinks so we got a couple of bottles of water and headed back to the hotel and watched some TV and went to bed.
