Today's adventures took us to all kinds of different places. Most of which were pretty impromptu - which is a fun kind of day to have once and a while.
After meeting a super cool mother-daughter cycling duo from New South Whales over breakfast, we struck out for Launceston. Our first stop was the Tasmania Zoo so that we could see some Devils!!!
It didn't disappoint. We got there just in time for their morning feeding, so we got to see and hear the little critters mow down. They are super interesting animals. They are only small things but they are oddly proportioned and have super strong jaws that give them one of the highest strength to size ratio of any animal. They also make an eerie growling noise that sounds pretty similar to Taz from bugs bunny, which is why they are called Devils.
Unfortunately, there is a disease that is wiping devils out across the state. It is a rare form of contagious cancer that is transmitted through their saliva. The disease, called devil facial tumour disease (DFTD), gives them facial tumours which eventually kill them. It's already wiped out up to 95% of the devil population in some regions.
At the end of the feeding we even got to pet one of the more friendly Devils named Laura. The zoo keeper was super friendly and let us snap a few pics as well. We were pretty stoked.
After the Devils we wandered the zoo for a while, checking out the many different kinds of birds, as well as the wombats, monkeys, and wallabies. We learned that we actually had seen a kookaburra on our travels - one of them dive bombed our car on our second day on the road, we just didn't know what it was!
Now I've seen everything except for a real big kangaroo and a koala. But I'm sure there will be more opportunities.
After the zoo we headed in to Launceston where we grabbed lunch and coffees and did a beer tasting at the James Boag Brewery.
Our next planned stop was in Evandale to visit a weekend market, but when we got there, it turns out it is only a Sunday market - whoops. Instead, we hit a little bakery that uses an old brick oven of a style which only a few were made. Basically they heat it up in the morning to 500 degrees and then bake the appropriate things when the temperature is right. They also use eucalyptus to give everything a certain smokey taste. It was a super cool place.
Our plan was to stay the night in Campbell Town, but we got there pretty early and the overnight rest area wasn't super duper so we decided to mix it up and stay in a hotel for the night. It felt great to have a hot shower and chill out on a coach for a couple hours.
Packing it in now after a long and eventful day. Only one more day left in Tassie before we're back to the mainland. Hopefully the last one is a goodie!
As always, stay weird folks!
