Today was such and exciting day! After a pretty early rise and a hearty breakfast of oatmeal and trail mix, we parted from our friends at Sands Pit/Wielangta and headed up the coast.
Our first stop, not far from our campsite was the Three Thumbs Lookout. From inland, it gave us an awesome view of Great Oyster Bay and Freycinet Peninsula. It was a great way to get excited for the day to come.
After a pit stop in Swansea to grab coffees, snacks, and free wifi, we continued on our way. We made one more impromptu pit stop at a place called Devil's Ridge where there was a lookout tower with awesome views of a bay surrounded by a winery. Then we continued on our way to Freycinet National Park.
Once at the park, we headed up one of the quintessential hikes in Tasmania: Wineglass Bay. It was an easy but beautiful hike. The trail was pretty steep but easy to climb as it was mostly stone steps. The hardest part was dodging all the tourists. At the top, we had a beautiful view of the bay and surrounding hills. Definitely an awesome photo op!
Next, I was feeling adventurous, so I split from the girls and headed back to do a tough climb up Mt Amos. The girls decided instead to do the hike right down on to the beach at Wineglass Bay.
While the hike up Mt Amos was tough, the 360 degree view from the top was surreal. On the way up, I actually thought about stopping as the climb got really tough at one spot, and I wasn't seeing anyone else so I was afraid that I was the last one up there. Since I wasn't hiking with a buddy, all it would take is one little slip and I would have been in trouble. However, after seeing a group with some 7 year olds I was feeling like I had something to prove so I continued on (good thing too because I was only about 15 minutes from the top).
The view at the summit was unbelievable. You could see Wingeglass Bay (same as before but from twice as high), as well as the Village of Coles Bay to the other side, and all of the surrounding water and forests to either side.
The hike down was tough as well, but I was feeling so good about the views that I hardly noticed. I ended up doing the hike, which was supposed to take 3-5 hours) in roughly 1:45. Tough guy.
After our hiking adventures, I met Steph and Victoria back and the car and we headed out to find our campsite. Because we got a park pass for hiking, we have access to sites on the peninsula at a place called Friendly Beaches, so we decided to head there.
The spot is amazing! Drive on camp sites that are all 50 feet from the beach. Just amazing. Before dinner we went for a walk and a little photo shoot and then after dinner we headed back to lay on the rocks and appreciate the awesome view of the stars while we listened to the waves crash into the beach: an amazing way to spend an evening.
All in, the evening was pretty chill. This camping spot is amazing and I would love to come back here for longer if I ever had the chance again...but for now, onward we go!
Stay weird!
