Today was another amazing day exploring the Tasmanian back country. I woke up super early and headed to the beach to watch the sunrise over the Bay of Fires. I am so happy that I did because the view was absolutely stunning. The colour changes of the sky in the hour that I was there were unbelievable. Maybe that's why it's called the Bay of Fires. I set my GoPro up on a rock and did a time lapse so I will have a cool video to share eventually (stay tuned).
After coffee and breakfast with the girls we packed up and headed out again. Our first stop was back in St Helens to gas up, buy more water, and double check our route.
The first real stop was Ansons Bay. It was a cute little town with calm waters and pretty views. We didn't stay long but it was a great little spot.
After that, we headed all the way up to the North Eastern corner of Tasmania to Mount William National Park. Here we did a quick little hike up to the lookout where there was awesome views both inland over farm country as well as outwards towards the coast (see pictures). We also drove the rough track of the Kangaroo drive, hoping to see some wildlife. Unfortunately, Kangaroos are time-sensitive critters and there were none out in the afternoon (will have to try again at dawn or dusk).
From there we headed south west and inland toward the cities. We made a quick detour into Legerwood to check out some tree carvings. At the information centre there we chatted with the most pleasant older lady who gave us all kinds of insights. Apparently we missed a very cool Tin Dragon exhibit and cheese factory/pub/waterfall in Derby (shoot!), but she suggested a cool cafe and gallery to check out in Scotsdale (the next town). So we stopped there for coffee, groceries, and the bottleshop.
We settled for the evening in Lilydale, just outside of Launceston. This is our first night at a camp spot that is a little more urban - we even have a playground!
We did a quick little hike to waterfalls behind the campground as soon as we got here. I managed to get a soaker trying to get a fun pic (of course). Hopefully my shoe dries over night before I have to wear it again and start the endless cycle of rotten shoe smell...
Today didn't have any big major activities, but rather lots of little fun things: sunrises, coffee on the beach, photo ops, little hikes, pretty views, driving singalongs, full days without phone service, and of course soakers - A great way to end our tour on the Great Eastern Drive. Tomorrow we will hit Launceston and then head south for one more day of activities in Hobart before its back to reality.
Stay weird and stay tuned. Haven't been able to post many pics/updates while we were out of service so they will be coming en masse!
