Spent a few days exploring the majestic sights around Tulum. After being here, I'm not sure I would ever do an all inclusive vacation in Cancun when there is so many amazing things around here.
On arrival, we headed straight to the beach to make the best of the afternoon while we could. Then, on the first full day, we headed to the Mayan Ruins which are very close to the city. It was hot, but the structures are amazing and so beautiful right on the coast by the ocean. Packed full of tourists but still an amazing place to visit.
From there, we popped over to Gran Cenote. Cenotes are inland water holes and most of them have awesome cave structures which makes for wicked diving and snorkelling. Gran Cenote is big and quite popular but was still very cool and a welcome way to cool off.
Day two I strapped on the scuba gear and did some amazing cavern diving. First up was El Pit which is a massive Cenote with crazy cool features. Half way down the water switches from fresh to salt so you descend through the halocline. Then around the bottom (~35m) there are whisps of hydrogen sulfate from the decomposing twigs and leaves that fall in. There are also amazing stalactite formations up in the corner where you can also see the streams of light from the sun shining through the clear water.
Next two dives were at Dos Ojos. The first was some very cool cave/caverns. The second was more of that plus an awesome stop in a bat cave with just a little hole for light to come through so the bats were flying all around. Such a neat experience that I'm so glad I got to check out.
Of course, these few days also included many cervezas, tacos, and totopitos. Overall, Tulum was a pretty special place to visit. I would come back here again anytime given the chance.
