We spent the second half of the trip on Isla Mujeres - just a quick ferry ride from the port in Cancun, but it was like a whole different world. We stayed in the north end, but the island is very small. All the streets are tiny and most people get around on scooters or golf carts. The north end is full of little shops, restaurants, bars, and tour booking offices. We tried out a few, but we were fortunate that we were here during celebrations for the anniversary of the island's founding - so we ate and drank in the celebration space quite a bit.
For the first island adventure we did some more scuba diving. Here we did the MUSA (underwater museum) and the Manchones reef. The museum is super cool - definitely worth checking out either by scuba or snorkel. The reef wasn't fantastic in terms of coral or landscapes, but there were more fish than I've ever seen anywhere else so it was cool in its own way.
Our second adventure was the whale shark tour and it was everything we hoped. There were tons of boats but also tons of whale sharks! We had three awesome chances to get up close and personal. They are absolutely beautiful animals and as long as you can stomach the time out on the water, it is definitely a tour worth taking.
We also spent a couple afternoons chilling on the beach. It was super hot so having the chance to cool off in the water was key. We spent every evening at a tequila bar called Adelita's. We came for the free tequila but after making friends with the server, we might have gotten more than we bargained for. It's amazing how much better the tequila is down here. Worth the trip just to bring back a bottle! In any case, between the cheap flights, awesome beaches, and killer tequila; I'm sure I'll be back.
