Steph and I based ourselves for four nights in Sorrento, a small coastal town in close proximity to Pompei, the Amalfi Coast and the island of Capri. Today we headed to the Amalfi Coast, one of my top destinations that I just could not wait to see on this trip. We decided to rent scooters for the day, but Steph left her driver's license at home so we could only rent one, though we were going to head to another scooter rental agency to see if I could rent a second. We put on our dorky helmets and hopped onto the scooter that was sitting just off the side of a busy street in the middle of Sorrento. I have never driven a scooter before and am used to 4-wheelers that have a thumb throttle, so as I took off, we were weaving all over the place as cars and other scooters were whizzing past us. I was so terrified that I was going to crash right into something or someone because I was having a hard time balancing two people. I pulled over at a gas station to fill up and Steph switched to the driver's seat and ended up driving all day, which worked out because we saved a lot of money by only renting one scooter, plus I was able to take pictures all day from the back seat, not to mention we were able to laugh hysterically and talk to each other the entire day. I was nervous sitting on a scooter being driven by an inexperienced driver along narrow cliffs, with crazy drivers that overtake on blind corners, and tour buses hogging the road, but Steph did a good job after she got the hang of it. We had only one close call when I almost lost my left knee cap to a corner of an oncoming bus and simultaneously sprouted another 10 gray hairs, but other than that, it was a safe day...yikes.
The weather started out absolutely perfect but clouds rolled in just in time for when we arrived at the Amalfi Coast after an hour of driving along the scenic coast, passing through Positano on the way, which to me rivaled Amalfi's beauty. I was a little disappointed that the sun wasn't shining on the brightly colored houses and buildings, but at least we didn't get stuck in rain at any point. Before the clouds came, however, the water was so blue and picturesque. Absolutely breathtaking. We stopped for lunch in Amalfi, scarfed down chocolate and mint gelato, and then headed back to Sorrento to beat the rain.
Good times on the coast of Italy!
