So having left LA on Tuesday the 6th at 10.30pm after a ten hour flight we arrive in Fiji on Thursday the 8th at 5am. This means on Wednesday the 7th of March 2012, I ceased to exist. Odd. Could have been a great day. Stepping off the plane I had an overwhelming sense of achievement that I had survived the infinite abyss and emerged with all my limbs and orifices in the correct place. Ideal. At this early hour the temperature is already at 25 degrees. Tidy. Catch free shuttle to Smugglers Cove hostel and meet friendly Jess from Colorado on the journey. She was residing at the hostel next door and fancied renting a car to tour around the main island, Viti Levu (Fiji is composed of 333 islands). We are up for this cultural experince. Arrive at hostel and are super shocked at how nice it is for 8 spot a night. Right on the beach front, spotlessly clean, air conditioned, hammocks by the sea, coconut man, bar and grill, cafe. Everything your heart desires. Got involved, bikini'd up, hit the beach..most of the day. SO HOT. Also, it was still rain season there so the humidity was really high. Roasting hot and damp unlike anything I've ever experienced. Checked out Island hopping options (travel desk in the hostel) but 1) Pretty expensive hostels in comparison to one we were in 2) Only had five days 3) The heat kinda sucks out your want to do anything and 4) The hostel we were in was so sweet, kinda just wanted to stay. SO, we decided against it and just booked a day trip to one of the islands instead. Retired to our room about 4pm when a thunder storm started. We both konked out and woke up aout 9pm...guess we were tired. Had a munch, met our new room mates Paul (Lincoln lad, Aldi) and Kris (Chi-town dude now residing in the capital, Suva, doing a Phd. Legend). So lucky with the people we have met. Back to bed after that, both pretty burnt post day in the Fijian sun. Apparently there is no ozone layer there so the sun is fierce. SPF ridiculously high to be purchased tomorrow.
