Little Kirsty Ventures to Pastures New
Saturday
Grabbed some breakfast at the Thai roti stall before hopping in the longtail boat with the dude from 'Carpe Diem'. We were ever so slightly damp after facing the hyooge waves between the two islands. Arrived at Phi Phi Ley to see the breath-taking cliff faces acting as a protective wall around the island. We found a small inlet that led us into the "blue lagoon" and oh my. It was just beautiful. Limestone cliffs rich with greenery surrounded the lagoon, reflecting off the water, giving off some awesome colours of blues and greens. We were really lucky with the weather, since it's monsoon season, but the skies were completely clear of clouds and the sun was definitely out to play. The huge lagoon was practically empty, since we had arrived early so it looked like we were going to have the palce to ourselves. We enjoyed taking the boat all way around, infront of the cliffs- some of which over-hung at the bottom, to create caves and caverns that went deep into the
rock. Really tempted to go in but the currents were so strong, it would sook you in and spit you back out!
Next. we were taken to an awesome snorkleing site, just out of the lagoon. Our guide threw some bananas into the water and hundreds of zebra fish came jetting all around us to have a nibble. The water was pristine and crystal clear- not one sign off rubbish at all- twas amazing. Darren got a banana thrown directly into his face, which therefore resulted in him being swarmed by fishes, nibbling all around him- too funny! We went to a couple more great snorkeling sites, but gradually more boats began to make their way to the island so we thought we'd better get to our main destination while it was still quiet. I asked the guy if he would now take us to "Maya Bay" but he told us that it was impossible because of the high swell and the waves. I couldn't believe it! But all was not lost! He stopped the boat about 40m from the surrounding cliffs and pointed to a small hole in the face of the limestone. He told us we could jump off the boat, swim over and climb through the cave, then walk to the beach. Sounded awesome! So we stuck on some rubber shoes that he provided for us, donned our snorkel and mask, and set out on our wee adventure. The swim over the reef wasn't too bad, but the swell was oober strong as we got closer to the rock. We were getting sucked in at quite a pace and I was worried we'd collide with the jagged rocks with a nasty force. It was hard to keep above the sharp coral as well cause the water got shallower as we drew closer. Luckily there was
a rope there to grab onto as we were pushed into the inlet by the waves. Once up on the lower rocks, we had to steady ourselves for every set of waves that hit. Between each cycle of wave rushes, we had about 30 seconds to edge along the rocks, before another set of waves crashed into us, attempting to pull us back out to sea. As quickly and carefully as we
could, we ducked into the small hole in the rock and clambered up and through it. Once through (luckily only suffering from minor cuts and scrapes), we navigated our way up a faint path, past some palm trees, and finally over a small hill, to be faced with the most breathtaking sight so far. I can honestly say I thought the beach looked better now than it did in the
movie! I was worried it would've been ruined by the number of tourists visiting each year, but it looked absolutely pristine. We were so lucky to have such amazing weather and have the entire beach practically to ourselves bar another couple of people. The other tourists obviously wern't up for braving the cave to get there! Gutted we couldn't take the camera there but luckly we had the underwater one with us, so managed to get a few snaps with that. The waves beyond the bay must have begun to settle, since gradually some speed boats managed to make their way in. So as the tour groups arrived, we were off. Wish we could have stayed longer, but we didn't want to keep our guy waiting too long. It was gorgeous though.
Next we headed back to Phi Phi Don to check out the "Cliff jump". It involved jumping off the boat, clambering up some oober sharp rocks and bounding off a 25ft cliff into the ocean below. Darren took the challenge first, but made the mistake of looking down from the cliff for too long. No further comment. I was up next, and didn't look down once- just went
straight for the jump. My brain was totally rattled and washed out by the water that pounded up through my nose and mouth as I landed. Not a nice feeling. Felt slightly ill as we headed off for our final stop, which was 'Monkey beach" nearby. We watched the monekys get thrown bananas, then headed back to Carpe Diem to recoup.
We jumped in the pool for a rinse off, then went for a niice long Traditional Thai Massage. They cracked every bone possible, before finally we headed back to the mainland on the boat. Was really nice just sitting on the side of the big boat, with our feet dangling over the edge, listening to our ipods and watching the jet of water follow behind us into the saphire waters.
Once back on the mainland, we headed to a different hotel, where our bags were waiting for us. Headed straight out for a yummy Italian meal, then hired a DVD player and kicked back infront of a movie.
