We arrived safely in Thailand, the immigration took forever but we got there. Lifted money at the airport ATM when we arrived an it charged $7 to lift, rip off, really hoped they weren't all like that (they are! 180baht). We got the shuttle to the hostel (180baht pp); we've been with some dodgy drivers but he was by far the worst, swerving in and out of cars, tooting people out of the way who were too slow etc. He also didn't know where our hostel was and tried to drop is somewhere different. We got there to Capsule hostel in Patong Beach at 10am. Agoda says check in at 10 and they say we can't check in until 1. So use my best pleading skills, he let us check in early. I said, 'We booked this hotel because of early check in, we haven't slept all night'. So We slept until about 1.30. The hostel was Korean style, which meant that there were mattresses on the floor separated by small wooden sides, and our room was like a wooden garage, with a mattress, shelf, and a light and plug socket at each side, with a roller blind at the foot, and one of the same rooms below and at the sides. Pretty cool, different from places we had stayed before. The toilets were western but with lots of buttons depending which part you wanted to wash lol. We spent the afternoon exploring the streets.
Had our first street food, literally pointed to a picture and said, that one, which thanks to Kenny and his 'aww shove a bit in', of chilli, I near choked on the first bite. I have never tasted something soo spicy!! I thought my lips were on fire for about 15mins until we got a McDonalds ice cream and held it on there. Spent the rest of the day on Patong beach; that was interesting to say the least. Kenny listening in on a conversation of men trying to buy thai women for the whole night. It actually really happens. We headed back and got showered, had some food. Saw what Patong is really like and went to a show called Illuzion. How to describe it? Musical impersonations, good dancing, terrible costumes, pure cheese. It was free in with the catch being the cost of drink. Chang is usually 80baht ($3) but cost 220baht in there, needless to say we only bought one drink each for the whole 1.5hour performance. Afterwards the place was really alive, people everywhere, people standing in front of you and really getting in your face trying to get you to go to a ping pong show. Just smiled and said no thank you. Women pole dancing in every bar. Everyone trying to sell you selfie sticks. The clothes are cheap, they have fake everything; headphones, Nike trainers, MK purses. If you were on holiday, you could get a full wardrobe and bag collection, every gadget around. We described Patong as Vegas on steroids, though cheaper, sleezier and more compact (just one short street); a real eye opener.
The next morning we got our free breakfast, toast eggs tea and coffee, and some porridge thing but there wasn't any left. Sat down at the table and got chatting to Jess and Brianna, Americans who are teaching in Thailand, John the American, Mike the Aussie, Marie from Portugal and Eliza from Colombia. We all decided to go to beach together. So got a tuk tuk, which has a different meaning in phuket than it does in Bangkok. It's like a mini truck that you sit in the back of. Can fit 6 people in and he blared the music the whole way to kumala beach. A little quieter than Patong. Nice wee day with good company and big waves. Had our first pad Thai, which was quite nice but I asked for no spice, think it would have been better with more spice. The last dish scared me. That evening we played Cards Against Humanity with a few drinks, also with Jo and Sam from England, pretty funny but think it would have been better had we had a British version, as we didn't know who half the named famous people were. We headed out onto the street, went to a ping pong show, meet again, as I felt soo sorry for the lady. Free in but the coat of the 1st drink was 500baht, form down to 400baht ($16) as there were about 16 of us by this stage. We walked around trying to find another bar, not that the choice was limited, but ended up in a place that had chairs that looked like ladies bums with thongs on. It had pole dancers (with their clothes on) scattered throughout and some of them were amazing!! I couldn't keep my eyes off this one. Soo talented. After a few too many, decided we better call it a night as the bus in the morning was at 7am.
Phuket was definitely worth a visit, but certainly 2 days in Patong was enough craziness for us :)
