After a long drive, we arrived in Cape Breton National Park. Very beautiful to drive through and on the way we saw two Moose, woo hoo. When we got there, we checked into HI Pleasant Bay and stayed in a wooden bunkhouse. Activity if the evening was hiking the Cabot trail, along the skyline for a few hours. Was absolutely beautiful. Such a view from the top; could see the winding road we drove, the forests surrounding us and the sun setting on the sea. Managed to spot a chipmunk, a snake and three more moose; one web let us get really close, then bolted past; a big scary to have those big antlers coming straight for ya! It was here I got my favourite picture so far, of the sun in a beautiful sky amongst the trees, the album cover photo. On the way back, we caught the sunset; I have never seen the sun look that way, it was luminense orange!! So arriving back at 9.30pm, still not having had dinner, we had a mad rush to get the pasta cooked and it was thoroughly enjoyed.
Not ready to finish the night yet, Kenny, Ronja, Kevin and myself headed down to the beach. With the aid of a headlight and a phone light, we made out way down a sanddune/cliff in the pitch dark, carrying beer and wine. Lovely wee stoney beach, (where all the atones looks like they had glitter in) and a beach with lots of driftwood, perfect for our fire. This time we didn't need to blow on it to keep it going, the sea breeze did it for us. We just lay, drank, listened to music and watched the shooting stars in the perfectly clear sky; this is what holidays are made for. We even got invited over to another campfire on the beach, by a group of people having their childhood reunion, such a random bunch of lovely people and they treated us to some moonshine; home brewed whiskey, there's a first for everything!
Had a chilled next morning, while some of the group went whale watching, where Nancy and I ventured down to the beach in daylight; o dear god! How the hell we got down that sanddune/cliff face I'll never know haha Always lovely to get to know the people in the group. Having left the hostel, we ventured onto our first beach for swimming; the water was absolutely freezing!! So after about 10 mins standing, keeping my hands outa the water, I realised that if I put them in and started swimming, I would heat up, silly me. It was great tho, hardly anyone on the beach, so refreshing and saw lots of mini shrimp.
Next we hiked the Midline trail; more beautiful cliffs, flowers (some that smelled of candyfloss), trees, seeing the traps to catch crabs as they moved from lobster to crab season and hoping to see a whale again, maybe next time :)
