What can we say about Johannesburg... hmmm...well... not our favourite city I'm afraid. The hostel was 'distinctly average' with a lovely brown stain on the ceiling. Security was tight with a electric fences, barbed wire and access controlled gate and you couldn't go out after dark which meant we were stuck without any food or drink when we arrived...thankfully Debonairs Pizza Delivery were on hand to save our spirits - a quality African pizza delivery company!
We did a tour of the City but much was closed given that it was a sunday. Our driver took us to the towns highlights though - we saw the Nigerian drug dealers of Highbrow, the deserted offices of the business sector and many roadworks of the city... We joke - it was actually quite interesting and we got a stunning view from Africa's tallest building (50 floors high) and spied on Mandela at his house (was surprised to see a beaten up old Fiat Panda parked outside...Mandela's pride and joy???!!!)
Compared to Cape Town Jo'burg was a disappointment.... perhaps we were missing something...? We are ready now for Singapore - bring on South East Asia!
