We picked our friend Phil up from the airport who is joining the campervan adventure with us from Cairns to Brisbane for 3 weeks. After 24 hours travelling Phil was talking a load of waffle...then we remembered that's what he's always like anyway!!
Our campervan has been nicknamed the 'Wizard of Oz'...it is very cool with 2 double beds, kitchen area, fridge and toilet (which the lads won't use as they don't want to empty it out again- wimps!) We're looking forward to some chilled out evenings 'throwing a shrimp on the barbie'!
On our first day in the van we drove up to Port Douglas along a stunning coastal road, stopping to see the views and spent some time exploring Port Douglas before stopping at Wonga Bay to camp.
The next day we headed up to the Daintree rainforest and boarded a boat for a crocodile cruise. The Daintree river was stunning and we spotted a mammoth croc on the bank, plus two small baby ones basking in the sun. We also did a couple of rainforest walks and visited the Rainforest Discovery Centre where Mark was mysteriously dripped on with a black ink-like substance which ruined his brand new t-shirt. Could this be the juice of a mysterious fruit? Or the droppings of the evil Cassowary bird? We then headed up to Cape Tribulation and walked on the stunning beach where the rainforest meets the reef.
The following day we headed out for a snorkelling trip to the Great Barrier Reef aboard the wave-piercing boat 'Quicksilver'. We headed out to the Agincourt reef right on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef and in the distance you could see the breakers where the reef falls away in a 1km steep cliff into deep ocean. Kim and Mark donned attractive, skin-tight lycra all-in-one 'stinger suits' to keep the jellyfish at bay (attractive!) before swimming amidst the tropical fish and stunning corals. We also went in a semisubmersible vehicle to view the deeper coral - cool!
