We had been told that the journey from Siem Reap to Bangkok was called the "Boulevard of Broken backsides" however, as we had optimistically booked an air con coach we figured we would be fine. At 7am we were eagerly awaiting our coach when a rundown, ancient, rusty bus showed up we figured they had clearly made a mistake but no, we had again been screwed by Asia. Trust me your day is not complete unless someone charges you for something you havent had, were told was complimentary or the price quoted was for only half the journey.
Reluctantly we along with 30 other boarded the bus which had no separate baggage section so were literally boxed in by them. Backpacks went down the entire aisle and were above everyones heads. Some people even had to sit on plastic chairs in what remained of the aisle. Safety was at a premium. We had a flat tyre in the first half an hour and the air con clearly didn't work. Hattie nearly thumped the girl in front of us who spent the 6hr journey opening and shutting the only window, it was hilarious.
Anyway we eventually arrived at Poipet and walked the 1km border crossng in the mid day heat in our walking boots, honest to god how we are not both now 5stone amazes me. Fortunatley on the other side was a luxury air con minibus and the remaining journey was sorted. On board were 2 English girls, Annie (spookily from Sherbourne) and Jennie. We arrived in Bagkok late, found a room on the 6th floor, shared with the laundry ladies and then went for some food where we were served by the first of many lady/ boy waitresses. Bangkok was everything we imagined it would be busy, noisey and a little bit bizarre.
We spent the morning walking along the river and seeing, yes you guessed it temples. That night we aught the night bus and then ferry to Koh Tao, a beautiful Island off Thailand. We spent three days there, despite having a disasterous 1st morning (again involving us beeing conned by some dude) however, we were really firm and eventually got our way. Well done us. Annie and Jennie were there also and we spent our time swimming, snorkelling (sometimes with sharks) and kayaking. All very cool.
On the 7th we left Koh Tao and got our 1st night ferry and then bus to Phuket, boy you guys are finally up to date. We arrived here yesterday afternoon and have spent our time so far walking around the old town and recovering from bizarrely head colds and sea urchin bites. Nice. That said weare both well and still really enjoyng ourselves.
Tomorrow we are heading further south to Hat Kata for a few days snorkielling and kayaking before returning to Phuket for a jungle safari. Busy, busy, busy but lots of fun.
Lots of love to you all and thinking of you lots xx
